About Abby

Adoption Fee: $375.00
German Shepherd
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Stunning Abby just knocks our socks off. As an adult dog, approximately 4 to 6 years old, this beautiful, black and tan German Shepherd lost her beloved owner, who recently died, along with her family dog pack. Abby's owner was a big hearted rescuer, and all his girls were rescued from various nefarious situations, but then he fell into a long period of debilitating illness. Abby came to us with her housemates, all three beautiful rescue German Shepherds, who were shortchanged on their happily ever after. When Abby arrived, she was frightened and afraid of change. In just a few weeks, she has come out of her shell, and has adapted nicely to foster care. She is a lively, vibrant adult dog, and who presents some puppyish energy, and while the condition of her teeth suggest a mid-age adult dog, her vibe sometimes feels younger. Abby is a powerful large herding breed dog, and while we cannot piece together her history, it is clear that her former owner's health decline put Abby at a training deficit. And, it was obvious that Abby was not getting enough exercise. Our first step in Abby's program was vigorous leash walking, to create a calm, relaxed mind and body ready to accept obedience commands. Abby has developed beautifully, and is now beginning to grasp basic commands. She is a dream to train, is very eager to please, and responds well to all positive reinforcement techniques. She is praise and treat motivated, so adopters will be able to continue her work easily. Abby has already passed many components of the Canine Good Citizenship test, could easily work toward her CGC certification. Abby would be a great fit for an active single or couple who enjoy the outdoors and can provide for a good amount of exercise and leadership. She has not been around small children, and we suspect that she may find extremely young children overwhelming. Toddlers might not be the best fit for an active powerful dog. Abby is used to living with other large dogs, and seems to find their company soothing. She'd be a great fit for a multi-dog home, preferably with other well behaved large rescues, who could provide her with a calm pack dynamic. Abby has good house manners and is house trained in crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during Abby's transition to a new home. She is in excellent health, and is at an ideal lean body weight of 78 pounds. She is spayed, and has had a complete dental procedure, with no extractions needed. Her pre-op blood work was within normal limits, and serves as a baseline for adopters in assessing her ongoing health needs. Abby has received routine vaccinations and health screenings, she has been dewormed, and has been on regular heartworm/Flea/tick prevention.
