About Big Boy

Adoption Fee: $200
German Shepherd / Ibizan Hound
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Name: Big Boy Sex: Male Spayed/Neutered: Yes Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Hound (short coat) Weight: 98 Height: about 29' at the shoulder Estimated Birthdate: 8/23/2014 Fence Needed: Yes.. prefer a pretty tall one but Big Boy does not try to leave his yard unless he is left alone. He really loves people. Location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Adoption Fee:$200 Date into Rescue: 4/5/2019 Reason for being in rescue: Big Boy was living in a rabbit hutch and visiting the surrounding countryside as he could get out easily. Not all the neighbors appreciated having canine company drop by whenever he wanted to and threatened to call animal control. The owner would not make BB an inside dog but one of our volunteers found out about the gregarious, happy oversized dog that was heading to the pound and an uncertain future and begged us to take him in. Special Needs: Big Boy has been treated for heartworms 8/23. He will need quiet for several more weeks and a follow up heartworm test in six months. What kind of home would be best for me: Big Boy is a gregarious, people loving dog that is looking for an active home. Once he knows you, he is almost giddy to be around his people. He loves being outside and would like nothing more than to be someone's hiking companion. Big Boy is not a farm dog - no chickens please! What is my personality like: Big Boy is a gentle giant! He moves pretty slowly around people, and is a little cautious at first. We don't know what his background is or what may have happened to cause this reaction. However, once Big Boy knows you, he is happy you are there! Cars are new for Big Boy. He rides just fine in them (with a little curiosity) but hasn't quite figured out how you get into them yet. Be prepared to help lift him in until he figures it out! This boy does love to walk though. Put him on a leash and take him on a hike and he is happily exploring. He needs continued work to prevent pulling on a lead, but overall is a great walking companion. Under the big exterior is a heart of gold. Big Boy is as sweet as can be. His caregivers best described him as a goofy love bug. He likes to have his head and back scratched, and will back up into you or lean against you to remind you he is there (as though you could miss him!). How do I act when I first meet new people: Like the more timid child who needs to warm up, Big Boy needs to get to know you for a few moments and then is all in! Tips and Tidbits: Big Boy is impressive. You don't expect something that big to be that well behaved. In fact, he was so impressive that when he was at an event at a local store, a couple met him, went home and thought about him, came back and handed us a check for $800 which paid for his heartworm treatment. They felt like the gentle, massive dog deserved every possibility to go on to make someone a fabulous pet. We are thankful and grateful to this couple for helping this big boy get the treatment he needed. House trained: Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.
