About Jay Jay

German Shepherd mix
Age: Young Puppy
Sex: Female

We are fostering a 6 month old German shepherd mix. She is 65lbs and when she jumps up (we are working on it), her paws can touch my shoulders- I'm 5'4. The rescue we're fostering for is not equipped to handle big dogs. And as dog fosterers, neither are we. We have a small chiweenie dog, 2 cats and a 5 year old in our home. We were told that this pup is great with all of the above as she was coming from a foster home with 5 dogs, 8 cats and 4 kids under the age of 5. However - and this is likely OUR fault- the introduction of her to our dog went poorly and we don't trust her off leash in our house because we don't want her to injure our extremely mellow 10 year old dog, cats or small child. She went from tail wagging, 'smiling' to lunging and barking, no warning sign, no growl or tail stiffening. While they were both on leash (held by me and her by my husband) and a few feet from one another. She is learning better leash manners and has picked up on basic commands very quickly. She knows: sit, stay, come, lay down, no, leave it, get down / off, go get it / fetch. If we don't continue to foster her, she will go into boarding and not be able to continue to learn basic commands, or manners, or spend time with people. Then she'll just be even bigger and need more training and more patience in the future. She's far from a lost cause but we're unable to foster her much longer. The rescue group told me I may reach out to large dog rescues to see if any would take her off their hands. Alternately I am taking to social media and the internet to help the rescue find her a safe home with patient loving people.
