About Baloo

Great Pyrenees mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

This beautiful and very sweet boy needs a large fenced yard, a farm or ranch and a job. He is awesome with people but gets anxiety if tethered or confined alone. He was born and raised his first 4 months on a farm in a barn with sheep, goats, cows and horses. Since the age of 4 months, he has lived with me, an older chihuahua and 2 cats. All of which he gets along with very well. He needs to be introduced calmly to new animals as he is still young and tends to get excited and try to get new animals to play with him. Once he is used to them, he is fine. He has mainly been a pet, but has been introduced to many farm animals and really needs an outside job guarding livestock. The perfect situation for him would be to learn his new job from a more experienced livestock guardian dog. Several times he has alerted me to and chased off coyotes. He caught and injured the last coyote he went after. He will bark at stranger dogs and chase them off but has never been aggressive with dogs. He also hunts and kills rodents. We are living on a horse property in an RV. The property is not fenced so he is currently in a very large sized dog pen when outside that I made from reinforced horse panels. He has enough room to run around if he wants to but he is not content in the pen. He really wants to roam free on the property and will cry to do so, but he can't do that here with no fences. These dogs will roam off property if not fenced, especially if pursuing a predator. I will no t adopt him out as strictly a pet. We tried that already and although I love him dearly, he is not happy without a job. Baloo is about 90 pounds and will fill out a little more for the next year. He is 2 years old, neutered, micro chipped and current on rabies vaccine. His father was Great Pyrenees and his mom was Akbash and Maremma These breeds are all highly intelligent and sensitive livestock guardian breeds. They do NOT respond well to harsh words or harsh physical treatment. if aggression is used against them, they are bred to be independent thinkers and will defend themselves. He loves car rides with his head out the window and he really loves to swim. He will play with toys but not really a play fetch or dog park kind of dog. He takes food from humans very gently and has a soft mouth. He does not play tug and will release whatever is in his mouth if you try. He is cooperative and a perfect gentleman for both his vet and his groomer. He knows basic commands like sit, down, off, drop it, leave it and wait. He is a good boy indoors but prefers to be outdoors. He does tend to get too hot indoors at times. He has slept both indoors and outdoors depending on weather. This breed will dig in dirt to lay down in and cool off. He is loving, affectionate, loyal and protective of his humans, including my grand children. He is gentle and kind to his kitties and the chihuahua. This is a heartbreaking decision for me. I really love him, but he clearly needs a working dog home environment to be a happy boy and I cannot provide that for him at this time. I really want him to be happy! I will need to make sure any potential home meets his specific needs. Experience with livestock guardian breeds is a must. A gentle but firm person or people are a must to ensure his happiness and success. He has been trained strictly with positive reinforcement techniques which work very well with him.
