About Darci

Meet pretty Darci! She is a 4 year old,16 pound, wire-haired Terrier mix. Darci came to us from the shelter in Birmingham where she was taken after being found as a stray. She is pretty mellow and is good with other dogs as well as cats. She also does well around kids. She's a little timid at first, while she gets settled, but she does warm up quickly. We get the impression she hasn't had a lot of human interaction before now but she's not afraid of people, just shy. She's not sure about being picked up or held so we don't recommend trying that straight away. Give her a little time to settle first and she will let you know when she is ready. Darci suffers from a genetic condition that makes her vision a little blurry. It will not get worse over time or cause blindness, so she will always have the same sight she has now. Given that Darci was a stray, we don't know how long she had been on the streets and living outside. She is heartworm positive. This is easily managed by giving her a specific monthly preventative, the same as you would give a dog for normal monthly prevention. It takes about 6 months for a dog to become heartworm negative and the rescue will continue to pay for testing every 6 months until Darci does test negative. Being inside is still new to her but she's already discovered she likes to lay on the carpet and in her bed. She wasn't potty trained when we got her but she has been doing great with her potty training. As long as she is kept on a regular schedule with lots of positive reinforcement, she will get the hang of it in no time. Overall, Darci is turning into a pretty chill, friendly, family dog that will be fun to have around the house whoever lives there!
