About Sophia

Clumber Spaniel / Border Collie
Age: Adult
Sex: Female

Sophia was saved from a North Florida shelter. She was found abandoned with her two full grown puppies at an empty house. When we got her she was very lethargic, her gums were pale, and she could barely stand. We got her into the vet and after getting bloodwork done, she was diagnosed with AIHA, Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia. Evidently, this condition is prevalent in Spaniel dogs. The treatment is a medication called prednisone and she has responded well to it. We are continuing her weekly frequent blood counts until she is stable, then we will progressively decrease the prednisone. She has since perked up, and is able to get around without issues. She is the sweetest dog who wags her tail all the time. She loves to talk to you, which apparently is a trait of the Clumber Spaniel! She has not been crated but does go in one without issue. She is potty trained, uses a dog door, and gets along great with all the dogs in her current foster home. She loves to get belly rubs and has a big appetite due to the prednisone. Sophia still needs to gain some weight but she's slowly making progress on that end, she weighs about 35-40lbs but should weigh around 50lbs. Her blood count is coming up and although it plateaued last week we are hoping for an increase in the next few days. We are hopeful Miss Sophia will recoup from this. AIHA will always be present but with the appropriate medication dogs with this condition can live a healthy long life span. We are looking for a foster for this sweet girl who will continue to be able to care for her, get her blood work done, and would not be afraid of a challenge. Sweetest dog ever, she would actually be a great therapy dog. Please contact us if interested in being a medical foster. All medicals are paid by us, and we will oversee her medical treatment plan. Sophia deserves a chance to live. jan 2020 update on Sophia. Her conditions seems to have stabilized and we are doing bloodwork every couple months. We may try some new meds in the future. She is happy and healthy and on slow kill for her heartworm treatment. We are still in need of a medical foster, or an adopter for Sophia..
