About

Black and Tan Coonhound
Age: Adult
Sex: Female

Riley was thought to be 2, when we got her from a rescue 3 years ago. She's gentle and easy going. Outside, she's all about the nose. Whatever smells interesting, which is just about everything for her, is what catches her attention. She doesn't respond (at least, to us) so all our walks are with her leash. (As soon as she knows you have the leash, she sits and waits for it to be attached to her collar.) If you can walk for miles, she's right there with you, pulling you along as her nose guides her. (When we get home and close the door, she sits and waits for her leash to be removed.) Inside, she's a napper. While she wants to be in whatever room we're in, once she sees us busy with anything, she curls up for a nap. While there's a bed for her in each bedroom, during the night, she wanders around sniffing each bed checking on us, gets some water and then settles down wherever. (The night after her surgery, we let her up on the bed and, while she snuggled down and seemed to enjoy that, come morning, she was back in her floor bed.) She is house-trained, so goes potty outside. When we're out, she has the run of the house and even though she sniffs everything, she's never chewed anything.. or played with toys. (She once took a sock from the laundry room floor and we thought she might chew that but all she did was put it beside one of her beds.. nothing more.) Since she's been with us, there was only one time when we woke up to a surprise (#2) and that was the day after she had her spay surgery. Sometimes she'll sit by the front window. If someone passes, she watches. If a dog passes she's on her feet and stares. If a dog pauses outside our home, there's this deep moan sound she makes, then stops, once they continue on their way. If someone comes to the door, she's eager to be there when it's opened.. so she can sniff them. If they come in, she sniffs them several times and leans on their leg, hoping for some petting. She's never growled or snapped at anyone. When she gets scared, she wants to be right next to you. (This happens every New Years Eve and Fourth of July, when the city's fireworks are going off. In storms, she'll come check if you're anxious and seeing you're not, wander off again.) She loves going in the car. She usually rides in the trunk and looks out the windows as the world passes. She's sat on the front passenger floor a few times, on shorter trips, with the window down and she loves that.. she rests her head on the door and sticks her nose out to sniff and sniff. She responds to stop, sit, down and bed. She drinks a lot of water and eats dry dog food. She takes her preventative heartworm pills easy. (We dip them in peanut butter.) Her flea/tick preventative pill is flavored, so she takes that 'as is'. She's eager to be around us come meal time but is told to go sit and leaves us be. She doesn't beg but will stare at you while you're eating and then quickly divert her eyes when you catch her. When we're cooking, she sits on her rug and wait 'til you look over before licking her lips.. too funny. We take her to be bathed and a manicure regularly, and always behaves herself there too. We brush her outside weekly, which reduces the amount of hair we have to sweep up. She's a lovable pooch, who enjoys company and being petted.. and belly rubs.
