I brought her home about four months ago when I saw a couple trying to get rid of her in a Walmart parking lot... I asked the couple but they refused to take her to a humane society/ animal shelter. They said lots of people have luck getting rid of dogs at the Walmart parking lot! Filled with rage toward the people and sympathy for the dog, looking at me with sweet longing eyes, I took her home. Sasha had a lame front leg when I met her. It looked like a broken leg that was never treated and grew in wrong as she got bigger. She favored that leg and it was clearly weaker and atrophied compared to the other. Sasha and I were fortunate to have a friend, Brenna Voils, who is a professional dog trainer with over 20 years experience training and fostering animals. Brenna was able to take Sasha into her home to help me care for her, train her, and search for a forever home for Sasha while I covered the cost of her food, immunizations, spaying, and watched her on some weekends. Last Sunday, August 11th, Brenna called me in a panic. Sasha was out running on Brenna's farm, fell in a hole and broke her leg! Brenna is deaf and could hear Sasha's cries and screams of pain. We made a few phone calls, went to an animal hospital in Louisville. Upon arrival the vet staff automatically referred us to another hospital that would definitely be able to treat her. The surgeon did not have good news. The diagnosis is a displaced fracture of her left elbow. Because it is the same location of an old injury that was not treated, the likelihood that the surgery would be successful was slim. The surgeon said that there was a 50/50 chance that Sasha would break her elbow again even if we put pins in the bones to hold it together. After 2 days of considering a challenging decision and seeking other opinions from different doctors and pet advocates, Brenna and I decided to pick Sasha up with a bandaged leg and seek alternative treatment for amputation. Amputation sounds harsh for such a young dog; however, it is the only option that ensures that Sasha will not be in more pain. As a one year old, Sasha already has significant arthritis present in the elbow and was not fully using the left leg even before the accident. Recovery after an amputation is just a few weeks vs. several months after a surgery and the cost is significantly less. Believing that this is the right choice for Sasha to live a very happy and healthy life and be an excellent companion for her future owner, we look to our community for financial support. Brenna and I have applied to several nonprofit foundations for financial assistance including the Shamrock Arrow fund, Mosby foundation, and Paws 4 a Cure. We will continue reaching out to others. Thank you for reading Sasha's story. Sasha-3-Legs UPDATE. Tomorrow (Aug 30th) is two weeks since Sasha's surgery. Last week Sasha had to go back to the vet due to some swelling and fluid draining. They kept her overnight for observation and said she was ready to come home the next day. The vet said her incision site looks great and a little swelling was normal but give her plenty of rest. This past week we have been doing just that, plus short amounts of exercise and lots of love from dog and human friends. Sasha gets her stitches and staples out tomorrow!
