About Josie

Josie is an 9 month old, 20 pound Red Heeler mix. She is an absolute love bug who loves to cuddle on the couch and sleep beside you in bed. She is always right behind you waiting to see what is happening next. She always wants to be in on the action. She does well with other dogs, especially other dogs that want to play with her. She is also good with cats. Josie's new home should not have children under the age of 12. With small children she is just too excited and tends to jump at them which can be scary to them, even though she means no harm. We are working with her on learning to controlling her enthusiasm. Josie is a special needs dog. She walks, runs, and plays but her back legs don't bend. Josie doesn't know she is different and it doesn't slow her down at all. The board certified surgeons at Blue Pearl in Des Moines examined Josie. They let us know that she has been this way since birth. Blue Pearl believes Josie's mother had a parasitic infection when she was pregnant with Josie causing the damage to her joints. Josie's patella's (knee caps) are fused to her tibia's (long lower leg bone) so her knees don't bend. Her quadriceps that would attach her hips to her knees aren't developed at all. Her hips are normal and her growth plates are closed so she is at her adult size and weight. Josie can do some stairs, especially if they are carpeted, but ideally her home would be a ranch style without many stairs. She runs and plays just like other dogs, just a little slower.
