About Skip

Shih Tzu / Silky Terrier
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Skip is about 5 years old and had been a stray prior to coming in to rescue. He's a little guy, about 12 pounds, with bow legs and a lot of personality. Skip's new home should be quiet and laid back. He really only needs one person who's dog savvy and who's had experience with very fearful dogs. He wouldn't do well in a busy, bustling home with kids. He'll get very attached to his new owner. He's good around other dogs and ignores most cats. He needs a fenced yard; an elec fence is not an option. Skip's life before coming into rescue was one of neglect which left him fearful and untrusting of nearly everything. This will manifest by his initial dislike of just about everyone including you. He'll bark and growl when a new person comes around. If you give him time and don't force yourself on him, he'll come over to you; the start of a relationship will have begun......but on Skip's terms. Skip was with me nearly 4 months before he started playing with toys. I've seen that in other dogs who were left alone outside without so much as a stick to play with. One day I looked over and there was Skip tossing his toys up in the air. Yay!! A couple days later he started hoarding the toys in the back of his crate; a very healthy sign. Again, I've seen other neglected dogs do this. He'll warm up to you but on his terms. Skip is not a dog that likes to cuddle or be fussed over and will not snuggle with you. He's independent like a cat. We want his forever home to have no small children under 10. He was with me 4 months before he wanted to spend the evening with me in the living room. Previously he'd go in his crate in the kitchen as soon as it got dark out. He'd put himself to bed at dark! Again, another sign of a neglected dog that was left alone outside. There's been some great progress in the past 4 months but it's not fast and I wouldn't expect it to be fast when he's adopted. He needs someone who's gentle, extremely patient and won't force Skip into stressful situations (like a trip to Petsmart is out of the question at this point) and will just let him come around at his own speed. Skip is house-trained and loves going for walks. He's heartworm negative and on preventative. All vaccines are up to date. He's gained a little weight so isn't looking so bony any more and his fur is coming back nicely. Skip's coloring is gray, white with some brown. His tail curls up over his back.
