A5308005 Devon is a handsome 2-year-old light tan unaltered male Chinese Sharpei and Great Dane Mix who came to the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center as a stray on August 8th. Devon is very fearful in the overwhelming shelter environment. Devon is available to Los Angeles County approved Adoption Partners only with indemnity waiver required - http://file.lacounty.gov/SDSInter/dacc/1027136_SUADOPTIONPARNERGuidelinesandApplication7.2017.pdf We hope a compassionate rescue will give him the valuable second chance to save his life!!! Assessment notes on 10/15: Devon barked and growled when the handler first approached the kennel, but quickly settled. His tail was high and slightly stiff with a fast wag, his pupils dilated and constricted several times, and his ears flicked back and forth. He approached the front of the kennel slowly, and sniffed the handler curiously. He then jumped against the kennel wall in an effort to see the barking dog next to him. Since he has displayed barrier reactivity and high arousal with the other dogs next to him, he was moved to the outside of the kennel while the other dogs were locked inside. On the outside of the kennel, he approached the front of the kennel, and leaned against the kennel door. He allowed the handler to pet his side for a second, and then he walked to the rear of the kennel. When the handler unlocked the kennel door, Devon approached again and wagged his tail quickly. He sniffed the leash, but would not allow the handler to leash him. He retreated to the back of the kennel again, and would not approach the handler again. The handler went back to the inside of the kennel, and moved the surrounding dogs outside before opening the divider to allow Devon to come back to the inside of the kennel. He approached the handler and sniffed her again, and then retreated to the back of the kennel again. The handler attempted to leash him several times, but he continued to dodge the leash. He tried to dart out of the kennel a few times. After several minutes, the handler was able to toss the leash over his head, and he rushed out of the kennel eagerly. He ran straight toward the runner, who had come to assist the handler, but the runner was able to dodge him. Devon pulled strongly on leash, and stopped to mark everything he saw. It took several minutes to get him to the yard. He stayed close to the handler, and leaned his body against her legs while she collared him. He was difficult to collar as he kept dodging the handler whenever she tried to place the collar around his neck. After several minutes, the handler was able to collar him and place him in the catch pen. He sniffed the catch pen thoroughly, and then jumped against the gate. His tail was high with a fast wag, his eyes were soft, and his mouth was open. He entered the yard quickly, and ignored the other dogs in favor of exploring the yard. After a few minutes, he began greeting the other dogs, and tried to mount everyone. He roamed the yard anxiously, and was tolerant of being mounted by one of the male dogs. He briefly engaged in playful behavior with one of the female dogs, and then continued to roam the yard. He stayed in the yard for a few hours, and remained friendly with the other dogs. When the handler attempted to grab his leash and walk him out of the yard, he began to growl at her. His eyes hardened, and he watched the handler's movements. The handler backed the other dogs away, but Devon continued to growl at her. Once he was out of the yard, he stopped growling and allowed the runner to place a slip lead on him and to remove his leash and collar. He walked back to his kennel with the runner and an assistant. When the runner tried to place him back in the kennel, Devon lunged and tried to bite his side. The runner was able to stiff arm the leash and move Devon away from him as he dodged out of the way. The assistant attempted to help the runner, and Devon lunged and tried to bite his hand. The runner was able to guide Devon into the kennel, but could not remove the slip lead as Devon began barking, growling, and snapping at him. The runner was forced to use a padded hook to safely remove the slip lead. Devon is tolerant of the other dogs, and does not have a play style at this time.
