Nervous is exactly how I felt when I first met Kya. I had never fostered a dog before. I wondered if she'd like me. I wondered if I'd like her. It was like a blind date but with a dog. Kya surprised me. When I first met her, she offered her paw to me like a handshake. My last dog never did that. At home, she did the same to my kid. When she met my wife, she crawled into her lap. I had never seen anything like it. Cattle dogs typically regard strangers suspiciously. Kya wanted to connect. I built a little obstacle course in the backyard to give us something outdoorsy to do at home. For the past couple of days, we've leapt over logs and climbed firewood stacks. We've sprinted through foliage and jumped on the lawn chairs. No matter how weird the activity, Kya followed me. I'm stunned really. It's been less than a week, yet she goes anywhere I lead. Kya has a rare, trusting soul. When it's time for bed, Kya looks alert. She's three years old and a lean 43 lbs. I can only speculate about how hard Kya's former life has been. Animal control in Waco, Texas found her alone in a field. She might have been kept for breeding puppies. Abandoned, even. I think she feels uneasy in her crate. So, I read to her until she sleeps. I can tell she wants a place to feel safe. She wants a family. She will be spayed prior to adoption.
