About Piper

Adoption Fee: $175
Rat Terrier
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Pretty, playful, and personable, 3-year-old Piper could be described as a perfect family dog. Quiet and shy at first, this 14-lb. Rat Terrier will become quite the sweetie once she warms up to you. If you have another friendly, confident dog to be her buddy and show her the ropes, it will help her feel secure and comfortable with the routines of your home. Fond of children, Piper always stops and tries to meet the kids she encounters during her walks. She would probably love to belong to a family with well-mannered, kind children, who could indulge her with lots of play and attention. She's also said to be loving with cats and gentle with small animals, such as chicks and bunnies. Piper's perkiness will remind you of a puppy's as she plays fetch with her humans and races about with the other dogs. And as with any pup, you'll need to monitor her desire to chew things, especially plastic items like pens and markers, and provide her with plenty of appropriate chew toys instead. Fortunately, she's a polite grown-up girl in all other respects. She's fully house-trained and doesn't try to find ways to escape a fenced yard. She's also pretty good on a leash, although she might pull a bit if she hears or sees any people or dogs as she's quite motivated to greet them. Piper does have a gait that is slightly off due to an injury she received to her right hind leg as a puppy, when her Golden Retriever brother at the time accidentally stepped on her leg, requiring her to wear a series of casts to heal as she continued to grow. She will often hold up this leg when she runs, but the veterinarian doesn't think it causes any pain.
