About Chief

Adoption Fee: $50.00
Australian Cattle Dog
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

Chief is a fantastic 9 month old, 30-35 pound purebred, mini Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler and will make someone the best companion! I purchased him through a seller on CL, only to discover that he is completely deaf and has separation anxiety. The separation anxiety is the aspect causing the need to rehome, not the deafness, as he is extremely intelligent...in the short time I have had him, I have taught him to come and sit using hand signals and training treats. He is even now starting to look at me for direction. He simply does not want to be out of sight, which is common with deaf dogs, as it is for this breed. He tends to get somewhat destructive if you are out of sight, even just for a minute...only if out of his crate through, as he is completely fine while in his crate. No chewing or trying to escape while in his crate...just a little barking at first, but within 3 minutes he falls asleep like a log and sleeps quietly throughout the night. Because he is deaf, don't be alarmed if he looks like he is playing possum upon entering the room because he will not be alert like most dogs. He is 100% house and crate trained. He is extremely gentle with taking treats or food out of the hand and does not have any food aggressions, whatsoever. I have another Cattle Dog and a smaller dog of 10 pounds and he gets along really well with both. He lets the little one jump all over him and they play as if they were the same size. If Chief picks something up that is not his and I take it away, he pretty much drops it in my hand. If one of the other dogs tries to eat or drink with him, he does not snap, growl or anything. He truly is extremely gentle. He also loves water, as I have a small plastic kiddie pool that is filled with fresh water every day and he is either in it just walking around or drinking as I fill it. He is very content sitting with you on the couch or at your feet while you are watching TV or sitting outside. He just wants to be near you and see you, making sure you are there with him. Chief is current on all shots, including rabies, as well as neutered, though I did not get the paperwork for the shots when I bought him. This pup is not of the normal high strung temperament that many Cattle Dogs can be, but is very dependent on his human's presence. I just don't know if the separation anxiety will subside as he gets older, but unfortunately, I am not in a position to wait and see and would prefer to give someone who may have experience with deafness and anxiety the opportunity to continue working with him and provide him the best life ever. Chief is a very special dog and deserves a forever home and for this reason, I will vet anyone interested to ensure he is appropriately placed. I am not requesting a rehoming fee for myself, rather prefer a donation be made to this website. Thank you for considering giving Chief a home! Additional pictures available upon request.
