About Duke

Yorkie
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Duke is an adorable little 7 pound Yorkie, just looking for the perfect home that will provide him with love and care the rest of his life. Although his previous owners reported he is only 6 years old, we believe he may be slightly older than this reported age. He has lived with one family since puppy-hood, but found himself homeless when his family had to move and were unable to bring him along. When Wonder Pets Rescue brought Duke to the vet, we discovered he had a few health issues that needed attending to. Duke has a chronic eye infection that has improved with eye drops but may need ongoing care in his forever home. He takes his eye drops and eye wiping with a very good attitude, however! Duke also has a luxated patella in one of his back legs, which does not cause him pain at this time, but will need continued monitoring as he ages. Duke also had to have all his remaining teeth removed at his much-needed dental, which is common for his breed. He has also adjusted very well to this (he enjoys his canned and softened food very much!). This boy has had a lot of changes to adjust to in a short period of time and is taking it all like a champ! Duke has acclimated well to his foster home, getting along excellently with the other dogs there, and with all dogs he has met while out and about. He does have some terrier persistence and small animal prey drive and will chase/bark at the smaller animals, like cats and chickens. Duke would do fine with children who are respectful of his small size. Duke's previous family reported that he was potty trained. However, he has had some marking behavior in his foster home, which is slowing down now that he has been neutered. Duke would love his adopters to be patient and work with him on remembering to potty outside every time, but we are sure he will go back to his previously potty-trained ways, once he adjusts to his new home. Duke's list of loves include getting to be with his people, napping with a nice soft bed, followed closely by going for gentle walks and getting to 'putz' around in the securely fenced back yard. The downside to his favorite things is that he has a tendency to bark often and long when he is locked away from his people. Although his bark is not loud, this does make him unsuitable for apartment living. Duke's luxated patella does not decrease his enjoyment of going for walks and he gets very excited for walking time. With care and monitoring, the vet believes it should not cause any major issues for him. Because of his size, he does have a little difficulty with a lot of stairs or jumping up onto taller furniture. He will stop and look at you for help, though, when he feels he needs it. Duke's foster home reports that he is super easy to foster and care for, and he is such an enjoyable little guy! Preference will be given to potential adopters with experience with older/aging dogs, although inexperienced adopters who are ready and willing to care for Duke will be considered and will not be disappointed by him at all! Duke is neutered, microchipped, wormed, and current on bordatella, 5-way, and rabies vaccinations. His adoption donation is $275. Wonder Pets Rescue is a 501c3 non-profit organization and adoption donations are tax deductible. Find us on Facebook!
