About Smokey

Please read entire description. Smokey's adoption fee is $175. We are requiring a fenced yard and a playful dog companion for Smokey. Smokey is a 6 month old, 38 pound Silver Lab mix that didn't have the best start in life. He was with a young couple who did not have the finances, knowledge, or patience to care for a puppy properly. Puppy ownership is a big commitment. Unfortunately, at some point in the last few month, Smokey had blunt force trauma to his pelvis (probably from a kick) that resulted in a now healed broken pelvis. Currently, he gets around just fine and runs and plays with the best of them. You only notice the issue when he occasionally bunny hops with his back legs and uses his upper body strength to pull himself up on the couch rather than using his legs. He would not be the dog for you if you want to practice running marathons, but he could keep up on a decent hike just fine. Smokey is very cuddly and loves other dogs. We feel he will need a BFF canine companion in the home with him. We are unsure how he would do with cats, but we suspect he would be fine. Smokey would be good with children who know how to behave appropriately with a dog and be gentle. Smokey initially was behind the curve on house training and crate training but now he is having very few accidents and is very comfortable in the crate. In his current foster home, he is crated when he is unsupervised during the day. He would love to sleep on his person's bed at night and would very much love a fenced yard to be able to run and play.
