About Caesar

Adoption Fee: $50
Pit Bull / American Bulldog
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Caesar was one of our fosters who we got in January of 2014 after he was surrendered to the APL by his original owner. My understanding is that the original owner was in a relationship with someone and they broke up. His owner left the house where they were living and left Caesar there temporarily until he could make arrangements to get him. During that time, his ex began to beat and abuse Caesar and was taking photos of the dog and sending them to his owner as an act of spite given that the relationship had soured. By the time his owner returned to get him, he had a dislocated pelvis, multiple burns, had been strangled to the point of broken blood vessels in his eyes, etc. Needless to say, he was in very rough shape. He was helped through the Second Chance program at the APL and required two surgeries to fix his hip and over 6 months of foster care with us. After those 6 months, we decided to adopt him and he has been with us ever since. Caesar has had some issues with dog selectivity in the past. He can be jealous, mostly over space/territory and mine and my husband's attention. We have had issues with him nipping at other foster dogs and kittens over the years, primarily when they have gotten near him when he has a toy/bone/treat or when he is in a space where he doesn't want them invading, like his bed. He has never done more than nip at them, meaning he has never actually caused more than a scratch or cut. He does not 'attack' or 'bite' - he simply nips as a means of telling them he wants to be left alone. The issue there has been that he is an 80 lb pitbull so his 'nips' are certainly stronger than that of a small or weaker dog. He has spent his whole time with us, however, living with our other dog who is a now 7 year old shepard mix. He's about the same size as Caesar and was already in our home when Caesar arrived which I think is why they have always gotten along (Caesar doesn't feel like he invaded his territory since he was already here). They have never had any incidents of fighting or aggression, but outside of that, Caesar tends to be selective of other pets. The reason we are rehoming Ceasear is because there was an incident where he nipped at our 11 month old daughter in the same way he has nipped at other dogs/cats in the past. He nipped at her because she crawled toward him when he didn't feel like being bothered. Outside of this incident, he has never nipped at or bitten an adult. He has always been great with my husband and I. He is goofy, laid back, and loves to snuggle. I've never seen any signs of aggression from him toward us even when food, toys, bones, or treats are involved. He's been a great dog and we have loved having him. He does well on a leash, we can let him out in the yard off leash and he doesn't run away, and he's very treat oriented so it's been easy to train him. Caesar is on a prescription medication for itching due to an intolerance to the way his body processes protein. The cost is about $60 per month so any potential adopter would need to be able to take on this cost. We would love to find him the right home where he can thrive and bring as much joy to another family as he's brought to us. He really is a special dog. A home without small children and where he is the only pet would be ideal. He is so deserving of a good life and while we had hoped to be the ones to give it to him, we know that this environment is no longer one that is right for him and have to make the tough decision to find him the home that is.
