About Irish

Adoption Fee: $150
Pit Bull mix
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Irish is a 6 year old mixed breed dog who was surrendered to the shelter after his caregiver became ill. He weighs approximately 55 lbs. and is a medium sized dog. Irish is a sweet boy. He is well behaved and he's very experienced living in a home. He enjoys the company of his foster caregiver and getting to sit on the couch and hang out but he also loves chilling by himself gnawing on a good bully stick or antler. He enjoys playing with other dogs and he's one of those dogs who we consider low maintenance because he's an all around great boy! He is neutered, UTD on vaccinations, microchipped, house trained and crate trained and ready for adoption! Child appropriate? Children 8 or older should be fine. Irish needs some work on his jumping due to excitement and is a bit frightened by loud noises so we think he would do best in a home with older children. Other dog appropriate? Irish enjoys the company of other dogs but needs slow intros. He lived in a home with a dog his size and a small dog and did well but he is shy at first and needs time to adjust to new companions. Cat appropriate? No kitties for Irish. How is he with strangers? Irish greets strangers happily and seems fine with new people. He can be more interested in his surroundings than people sometimes which isn't a bad thing! What is his play style? Irish is goofy and silly and loves running around with toys and romping with other dogs. He does jump occasionally but does so in a playful, happy way and is quite gentle. He will wrestle with another dog as long as he feels safe. Does he like toys? Yes, he really loves his giant Nylabone toy and will chew on it for hours. He seems to prefer things he can chew vs. stuffies but he won't turn a stuffy down! His favorites are antlers, bully sticks, and hooves. Does he like water? He doesn't go in a kiddie pool so it doesn't appear he's crazy about water but he's never been to a lake or pond so that might be different. Does he like car rides? He doesn't seem to love being in a car, he's a bit anxious, but overall he rides ok. Exercise level needed? Irish would do well in a home where he can get daily walks around the neighborhood for a mile or so and has a yard to run around. We would characterize him as medium energy. He might enjoy being a jogging partner too! Behavior issues? Irish needs slow intros to new dogs and he can sometimes be reactive on leash. Once he develops a relationship with his caregiver and feels safe, he does much better. Medical issues? None known. Skills? Irish knows how to 'sit' can 'shake' knows 'down' and can catch food in the air. Special/endearing things? Irish is goofy and sweet and loving. Once he warms up to you he loves cuddles and makes a great couch buddy. He is content to play with his toys as well. Irish is very, very smart and learns very quickly. He is still very active and playful, very puppy-like despite being 6 years old. You get the best of both world's with Irish-puppy fun without the puppy behavior! He is fabulous in a home, very well mannered and which makes him a near perfect companion! Ideal home: Irish's ideal home would be with a family who is medium activity and enjoys spending time with Irish. He would prefer a quieter home where there isn't a ton of stimulation. Children would be ok as long as they are a bit older and have learned dog manners. He is very, very sweet and wants to please his people and love on them. He is a family dog and is used to being part of a family so he would need to be treated as a family member in his new home. He enjoys the company of other dogs once he gets to know them so having another doggie playmate could be nice for him. He would not do well in a home with cats as he does try and get to the cats in his foster home. If you have been a looking for a truly sweet boy who is smart and loving and a little goofball, come meet Irish and you're shopping will be done!
