About Dougie

Adoption Fee: $300
Dachshund mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Dougie Male neutered size: medium. Weighs in the 35 pound range but without the water weight, he'd likely be in the 27 to 28 pound range. He will not get bigger Age: estimated in the 4 to 5 year old range Breed: hmmmm - maybe a Dachshund mix? He's got a log body and shorter legs but he's mixed with something larger. We do not know for sure though because he was rescued from a high kill facility with no prior history on him. Vetting done: everything - vaccines, micro-chip, neuter*** (will be neutered before he goes to new home). On monthly flea/tick and heart worm preventatives House-broken: yes crate-trained: yes but doesn't need to be crated when no one is home good with other dogs: YES good with cats: yes good with children: yes. He is being fostered with a 2 year old right now. Dougie has portal hypertension likely caused by an unconfirmed acquired liver shunt. He has seen a specialist who is fairly confident that he does have a few smaller shunts, but that while his condition is not curable or treatable, it can be managed. The main symptom is abdominal ascites (free fluid build up in the abdomen). Managing the ascites includes a low sodium diet, daily diuretics (he is on lasix and spironolactone) and a liver supplement (he is on Denamarin). Dougie also gets Proviable (pro-biotic) and fish oil pills daily. Dougie will need to be managed this way for the rest of his life. Surgery is not an option. The shunt may reduce Dougie's lifespan by a couple of years but as of now, he's showing no ill effects besides a small amount of abdominal ascites (fluid in the abdomen). The only way to confirm that Dougie has a liver shunt is to do some expensive testing (like a Cat Scan) but the treatment would not change. Dougie's monthly costs would be in the $75 range for food, Heartgard, flea/tick preventatives, liver supplement and furosemide (lasix). He also needs blood work done every 6 months. Dougie is a wonderful, calm and well-mannered dog that deserves to find his lifetime people. He has been in foster care for over a year waiting for someone/family to adopt him and give him his 'fur-ever' family.
