About Hyman

Hyman is a very sweet dog. I adopted him 3 years ago from the ASPCA in New Castle, DE where he was taken in as a stray. Because he was a stray, his history is unknown. After caring for him for 3 years, I believe he was severely neglected in his original home as a puppy and possibly abused. He is extremely cautious around strangers and tends to be defensive. He is apprehensive of other dogs but is never aggressive towards animals; if he's defensive, he barks and growls like when a dog runs at him to play. He also flitches when I start to pet him (flinches with the first pet) even though I have never hit him in the 3 years I have cared for him. When meeting strangers, or get a 'bad vibe' from people on the street, he bites them. Also, if children are playing on the street, especially running in his direction, he gets defensive and will bite. He currently lives with a cat. Overall, he is a very sweet but nervous dog. I have come to the sad decision that is it best for Hyman to be rehomed to family who is best for him. He needs a lot time for training and play, he loves to chase small squeaky balls. Ideally, Hyman should go to a family who has experience training abused dogs, especially shih tzus, and to a home with other shih tzus (historically, he has gotten along best with shih tzus). He weighs ~17lbs (healthy), is about 16 inches from shoulder to tail, 12.5 inches from floor to top of head, ~10 inches from floor to shoulder.
