About Walt Whitman

Adoption Fee: $250
Treeing Walker Coonhound
Age: Senior
Sex: Male

Must be able to meet dog in Brevard, NC. Walt Whitman is a 10 year old neutered male Treeing Walker Coonhound who weighs 50 lbs. Walt was rescued after being dumped at a high kill shelter. Before that he lived the life of a hunting dog. Walt will melt your heart on looks alone. With watercolor markings, floppy velveteen ears, and a slender white heart shape on his forehead, this handsome guy gets compliments from everyone. Walt's soulful brown eyes are his most winsome feature, though. Framed by distinguished silvering fur, they reflect volumes of wisdom and love. He is in awe of the simple things in life: sunning on the porch, clean water and good food, a soft bed to call his own, and a spot next to you on the sofa. This dog is easily pleased--and will let you know with a little skip and twirl (which has earned him the nickname Walt-o-Whirl), or by looking at you upside down through his hind legs! His most favorite noise to make is befitting of a spritely old man with a heart of gold: a barely audible, totally charming grumble. He does this when he's rearranging his nest, falling asleep, or when he feels like talking to himself. He seems to be house broken and walks well on leash. Walt offers all-embracing love, friendship, and a gently wagging tail to everyone who crosses his path--from humans young and old to other dogs. Mr. Whitman's medium-persistence goofball demeanor is nicely balanced with his social motivation, keen attentiveness, and senior sense of ease and dignity. Exploring new horizons around the neighborhood with his impressive coonhound nose is sure to bring out Walt's energetic side, his infectious ear-to-ear grin, and--if you're lucky enough to pick up a scent from his past hunting life--the loveliest long, low bay you've ever heard. With the stamina of a healthy young dog, Walt will explore for hours in the forest if you so desire; but as soon as you're back home, he wants nothing more than to curl up for a nap or a snuggle! What could be more perfect? Walt's dream forever home would provide a fenced-in yard, a canine companion who doesn't play rough, plenty of time for senior sleep, and daily sniffing walks with a family that is home a lot. He is a little hard of hearing but responds to visual cues and even knows some ASL signs. This sweet senior boy deserves a forever family that will love him for the rest of his life - could it be yours??
