BETSY was saved IN March 2018, with her son, Bobby from a high kill shelter in Texas both with severe skin infections and demodex mange, which was treated and a clean bill of health given. BETSY is spayed, core vaccines, rabies, de-wormed, heartworm tested negative and micro-chipped. She has an estimated date of birth of 10 March 2016 and wheighs around 50 pounds. Betsy has been listed as a Pointer Mix, however, we are not able to say for sure what breed she is, it is up to you to look at her pictures and decide what you think she looks like. BETSY was adopted in October 2018, however, in March 2019 I received an email from the family saying that they was having problems and eventually BETSY was returned to the rescue on 3 April 2019. BETSY was living in a family home with a fenced in yard and was happy go lucky girl. She loves to give and get snuggles and was great with the children, although concerns were with her high energy she might accidentally knock small children over. She loved being outside as she did at the rescue chasing squirrels and wildlife. She went on a run with her dad and she seemed to enjoy it and was able to keep up and it was a great way to burn off some of her excess energy. When BETSY came back to the rescue I brought her into the house to live with me and 20 other dogs. She settled in well and has been great with the other dogs, but being a hunting breed dog she is constantly on the go and rarely keeps still. She will run and play outside but really needs to be taken on long runs and places where she can smell and dig around to stimulate her brain. She is a very smart girl, but can be easily distracted, again a trait of a hunting breed. BETSY needs to be kept on the go, she needs to be mentally stimulated and being able to go out and run and tire herself out. She is the kind of dog that needs a 'master', she looks up at me waiting for her commands and will lick me with such purpose, respect and love because she knows I am the alpha. BETSY has not shown any signs of anxiety whilst being here at the rescue, but there is a lot going on with living with so many dogs and 24/7 access to a large fenced in area. BETSY needs a family that lives in the country where she has a lot of places to explore, however, working on training and recall would be extremely important before she is allowed to run loose because as mentioned she is easily distracted and would most definitely chase after squirrels and wildlife. A family that can take her on daily runs in rural areas, would be a great for her and with no distractions of people or other dogs an enjoyable activity. A fenced in yard that is not accessible to the public or other dogs would prevent the problem of her barking at people when walking past, but this behaviour should also be worked on with a strict training regime so she learns she must respond to commands. BETSY naturally has a high prey drive and loves toys, if they have a squeak in all the better, she will play for hours happily and I am sure the puzzle toys for dogs would help keep her entertained. BETSY still has thin patches of hair where it hasn't grown back yet from when we saved her and she had bad skin infections and demodex mange. She is fully cured, but it will just take time for the hair to grow back, maybe a few seasons, or maybe not at all. It doesn't cause her any problems and is nothing to be concerned about. INFORMATION PROVIDED BEFORE SHE WAS ADOPTED When Betsy arrived at the rescue I brought her up in to the house with her puppy Bobby since they was recovering from Demodex mange, a non-contagious skin infection. Both mum and pup settled in great and are happy and comfortable in the house with the other dogs. BETSY's skin infection has cleared up and her hair is coming through wonderfully, it will just be another month or so before it has fully grown back in, but she is looking amazing from how she was when we initially saved her. BETSY loves to be near her humans and is extremely affectionate. Initially she didn't want other dogs to come near me, however, after some correction she soon learnt that she would get her fair share of love. Her puppy has been adopted and she is longing for a family of her own to love and adore. Betsy loves toys especially squeaky toys and will take one on the dog bed and play with it for hours, she also enjoys chewing on the hooves and horns and although will try to take them from other dogs, if they do not let her, she respects that and will go and find something else to play with or chew on. I think a lot of this behaviour is just from the horrible life she has previously had and now she is starting to feel good and getting lots of attention and cuddles she doesn't want to risk losing that, which is understandable. She is extremely responsive and knows I am alpha and responds to when I tel her 'no'. She is a very smart girl. She loves to chase the squirrels and wild animals running up and down the fence.
