About Elgin

Elgin was brought into Downey shelter in January as a stray. He was quickly put on death row after a laundry list of health complications came up the shelter stopped treating. His records from his time at the shelter indicate he had an eye wound and a drain coming out of his head that he ripped out himself and mouth surgery. After all these injuries with basic treatment, Elgin was in constant pain and started nipping at the medical staff, therefore, ending all medical treatment for Elgin. Upon rescue and his first vet visit, Elgin had a much needed dental and teeth extraction and was neutered. Elgin is very fearful of humans and the outdoors. We watched the staff at Downey take Elgin out of his kennel upon his rescue and was handled roughly because of his fear biting - we can only imagine how he was treated behind closed doors. Working with Elgin every day by hand feeding and giving him the time and space (for a few days he had his own suite in their guest bathroom) he needed to decompress from Downey shelter life and most likely a life of abuse before Downey, Elgin quickly realized he was in a home of love and comfort and quickly joined daily life with the rest of his foster pack - including cats who he gets along with famously. This sweet senior is not a fan of walks but enjoys his down time and is house trained. While he is interested in greeting whoever comes inside, he does not bark with the rest of the pack - nonetheless ever. Elgin is happy to receive belly rubs, pets and adoring love. Elgin has proved to be the retired, loving, senior dog who gets excited for treats, gives occasional kisses and curls up in your lap for a stress free nap. He would do best in a calm, more adult environment as we believe children might make him a little nervous.
