About Kuma

Adoption Fee: $80
Jindo mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Meet Kuma! Kuma is about 4yrs old (estimated). I picked him up from a shelter in CA. The only history he has is that he was found as a stray. This guy would do best with an experienced dog owner/trainer. He has awesome qualities: he loves being close to me when I'm home, laying at my feet and following me around the house. He's happy to just lay around the house all day, but he seems to have enough energy to be a good hiking partner as well. He's very smart and very food motivated. When I have food, he will ignore all other distractions that are around. We have taught him sit, down, speak, come, and stay. Here are some of his rough qualities: (1) He shows a bit of defensive aggression. I have only experienced this a handful of times (most of them being when he had a cone on after being neutered), and the occurrences have gone down the more comfortable he gets with us. He gives a clear warning, and is fine if you back off when he's feeling uncomfortable. (2) He can be a bit rough. When he gets excited, he will jump up on you. When he is playful, he can be mouthy. He has not used enough pressure to break skin, but he can leave bruises by mistake. This is why I don't think he is a good fit for a family with young children. (3) He does have some separation anxiety. When I am not home, he stays in our spare room. He claws the inside of the door and the carpet as well. He may need to be crate trained. I have purchased a crate to try to work on crate training with him. (4) He is wary of strangers. I have had some friends approach him outside of my house with treats and he did just fine. Inside the house, he gets more defensive. He doesn't seem aggressive, but he will bark at new people in the house and outside of the house. Overall, because of his food motivation, I think he can be trained out of a lot of these behaviors, but I do not have the experience nor the time to do so. He does okay with my other dog, but she is very calm and mostly ignores him. I am not sure how he is with other dogs, but we can always try a meeting.
