About Rodger

Adoption Fee: $25
Border Collie / Beagle
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Rodger is a very loving 2 yr old BC mix. He has made great progress in the 3 months he has been with us. We found him at Dekalb Animal Shelter. He had been a stray before being brought into the shelter. He is chipped. He can sit, lay down and just learned to stay.....for a little while :-). When we met him Rodger immediatley rubbed all over us - adults and kids (5 and 8yrs old). Very loving and loves to be rubbed....not necessariy scratched but rubbed. Also enjoys baths. Rodger has become very protective of us once he settled in and will growl and bark at any adults who come near or in the house. He is 'mouthy' and likes to use his mouth while playing but has been mostly gentle and is improving on that. Rodger has no food agression with dog food but has shown extreme agression when people food is around and especially if he almost gets it and then you come in to remove him from the food area. Aggressive correction is not for this dog as it sets him in protect mode. He has been very loving with our kids but as he has gotten comfortable he has gotten more and more aggressive with playing. Rodger has shown no aggression to other kids and no aggression to our kids when calm. However, his play agression escalates quickly. An older child/teen would be able to handle this, but our young kids don't know when to stop and end up encouraging the behavior. Rodger would be best in a home with experienced dog owners that can correct and work with him without yelling or overly aggressive tactics. He has made great progress with house training. He has only had accidents if he has not been let out in time. He needs to be let out at least every 4-5 hours and has been making it through the night most nights if let out around 10 or 11 pm. Rodger loves to chase the ball but is not obsessed and will stop and chew rather than continue to play. He is an active companion. He's walking better on the leash but needs a firm short leash to keep him from doing the BC spin all the time. Although Rodger has been amazing with our kids for the most part we think he'd be best suited in a home with teenagers and adults. He should be removed from any situations where there is people food PRIOR to the food coming out - especiall if kids are around. If it's just me and Rodger he will lay down for me and wait patiently but does not do good when there is a lot of activity and food. Which is pretty much all the time at our house. We love Rodger so much, but sadly, we feel we are not the right fit for him right now.
