About Zona

Adoption Fee: $50
Australian Kelpie
Age: Adult
Sex: Female

Zona is a female Australian Kelpie (unsure if mixed), roughly 6-7 years old, weighing a little under 40 pounds, and has been with me for about 5 years. She is current on vaccinations, spayed, microchipped, and housetrained. Unfortunately, due to the nature of my job, I no longer have the time to give her the attention and exercise she needs and since my ex moved out, she is left alone for 10-12+ hours most days. My job is taking me to DC where I will have even less time with the longer commute. I got Zona from an older couple in Dayton, Ohio, who rescued her out of the desert of Arizona (hence her name), where they found her dehydrated with a bad infection, got her fixed up, and brought her back to Ohio. She was not microchipped at the time and it is assumed that she was purposely left there. Zona is great with people and loves everyone. She has been good with children as young as three, however she may get a little rough when she gets excited and start jumping. She nips when she plays, and will nip at your heels if she thinks you're playing with her (herding breed). If she gets too excited and starts to get a bit rough, tell her to sit, pet her, and she will calm down. She is a very loving, energetic dog. She loves going for walks and exploring, and also enjoys riding in the car. I have taken her to/from CT and OH several times with no issues. Zona pulls on her leash a little, however, with her harness, it is not much unless she gets really excited about another dog or somebody giving her attention. Zona likes her crate and will occasionally go in there to lie down. She also eats and sleeps in her crate. She knows the following commands: sit, lay down, go to bed (to her crate), get down (from the couch, bed, etc), move, paw, outside, wait, stay, and come here. She can be a bit stubborn with the 'come' command if she's excited by something. If you ask her if she's hungry, she'll start barking at you and head towards her crate, however will not go into it unless she's certain you're following her. If you're insistent about telling her to go to her crate, she will go without you following her and stick her head out to make sure you're on your way to her food container. I feed her 1 cup of food in the morning and 1 cup at dinner. Currently I feed her Chicken Soup for the Soul dog food and do not allow her any human food whatsoever. Zona does not usually get along very well with other dogs. She is food aggressive with other dogs, however a person can take food out of her mouth with no problems. She is quick to defend herself and can be territorial and possessive with dogs she is unfamiliar with. That said, she CAN live with other dogs with some work and socializing. It took about three months before she was civil with my ex-girlfriend's two dogs, and she loves playing with them. There are still occasional spats, but it breaks up immediately once I yell and stand up. She lived with cats with her previous owners and did fine, however has not lived with any cats for about 4-5 years now, so I can't saw how well she would react. ------ If you have any questions or are interested in adopting Zona, please let me know to arrange a meet and greet. $50 adoption fee (donated to Rescue Me)
