About Austin-PENDING!

Cairn / Papillon
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

The Cairn Terrier/Papillon mix is a perfect combo for those who are searching for an extremely smart and loyal family dog. Of utmost importance...both breeds are famous for their great intelligence, devoted temperaments and extremely loving ways. They're also known to be trustworthy and generally very kind and playful with family members and other dogs. Austin is just a young guy and is learning about the ways of the world. He loves his long walks with his foster and is as social as can be! Any time a fun adventure is the order of the day - count Austin in! Terriers are known to engage joyfully and energetically... and then crash on the couch snuggling close to their favorite humans and canines. Austin is a cute as can be.. and a very sweet guy who favors the look and fun-loving personality of the Cairn while taking on the very intelligent and engaging qualities of the Papillon. Austin appears to be a non-shedding ..or very lightly shedding pup - it's difficult to tell for certain until his post-shelter coat grows in. He will therefore require a commitment to periodic grooming and great nutrition (a daily salmon oil supplement would be a great choice for longevity and hair care) to keep his coat healthy and cottony-soft. Austin is such a wonderful being...we think he represents the best qualities of the Terrier breed. At 18 months old and 13 lbs (anticipated to be approximately 15 lbs when full-grown), Austin seems to have left behind the neglect and lack of love that made up his early life. He has become a fuzzy ball of good-will that loves to please. The happier his family is with his behavior, the more he shines with his accomplishments. We would like to see Austin in a home that includes him in family time and activities...he'd love to be involved and would thrive in a forever home that truly loves him and considers him a very important family member. Austin would be a wonderful companion for retirees who have the time and desire to be best friends with a truly adorable young dog. A younger family that works from home or part-time would also be perfect. Austin would be overjoyed spending time with his favorite people..trips to the park, walking beautiful Colorado trails and riding shotgun while running errands would speak to this social guy. Austin doesn't require another dog to be happy.(as long as he gets both physical exercise and mental stimulation from his people). He does, however, enjoy his canine relationships with kind and gentle dogs. Austin's foster mom had the following to say about this sweet guy: Austin is a wonderful lovebug! he's super-smart, cuddly, housetrained (only 1 accident when he first arrived at my home) and has a sweet & playful nature. I found out immediately that Austin is SO quick to learn. Within minutes, he was sitting, giving his paw (hi-5) on command. I taught him down and sit/stay. He'll sit/stay at a short distance for a reasonable period of time..and then come flying in for a hug when you say his name. He's seriously one of the smartest dogs I've fostered in a very long time! This little guy would be a gift to children! My neighbor kids (8 and 11) suddenly think I'm the greatest (because of Austin of course :-) and set up a game of fetch in my yard. Austin was the star..but they found out his mouth wasn't big enough to get a hold on the hard tennis ball. We rounded up a stuffed ball that was perfect and everyone had a blast! At day's end, Austin is a cuddler. We set the neighbor kids up with a movie and Austin was sandwiched between. You could almost see the grin on his sweet face. Austin ultimately jumped down and busied himself with a toy. This guy's a great combo of best friend and then independent. He's very capable of busying himself when I'm otherwise involved..but when I'm up for play or a walk/hike, so is he! He also loves exercise (he'll be a champ on the trails) and lots of belly rubs. He's not a big eater so far and sleeps peacefully through the night right at my side. Austin is currently in a foster home in the Denver area. PLEASE NOTE: If you're truly interested in adopting Austin, please be sure to fill out our adoption application.
