About Sherman

Adoption Fee: $25
Great Dane / Saint Bernard
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Meet our Sherman. We adopted him as a pup from a rescue in Atlanta, GA 6.5 years ago when he was only 30 pounds and all legs. He quickly grew into the tall gangly dog (see attached photos....we think he is a hound/Great Dane/short-haired St. Bernard mix, approximately 7 years old, male, neutered, 95-100 pounds) that he is today. He is a sweet, loving, calm and patient dog. He has journeyed with us across the country (we now live in Everett, Washington) and has been with us for the first years of starting a family. As life would have it, there have been many more recent changes which have complicated life for our Sherman. Most dogs (and humans) would take this in stride and enjoy the adventure but he has Addison's disease which makes change and the subsequent stress physically challenging for him. He was diagnosed a little over 3 years ago and requires monthly injections and daily pills but more importantly he needs to have his stress monitored and minimized. With the demands of our current life (including the chaos of a toddler) and the needs of Sherman, we are seeing that we are unable to provide him with the consistent routine and attention that his medical condition requires. His Addison's disease is relatively easy to manage. He is taking Percorten (once every 28 days) and prednisone (5-20mg daily, varied with stress level). The monthly cost for his medications are between $200-$250 (if administered in clinic) or $140/month (if you feel comfortable administering it at home; it is a simple subcutaneous injection; I am looking into cheaper alternatives). It is recommended that he get lab work every 6 months for monitoring (of course variable per vet clinic but ranges from $25-$75 plus/minus office visit fee). He has only had one crisis since his initial diagnosis (likely due to the stress of a move). Additionally, we give him two fish oil and one glucosamine-chondroitin pills with his morning food. He occasionally takes carprofen and gabapentin for pain. His vaccinations are up-to-date. He receives flea and tick medication monthly as the season/location requires. His routine is rather low energy. He likes to go for a couple half-mile to 1 mile walks a day and/or chase the tennis ball for a few minutes. He prefers carpeting and doesn't like to use large expanses of slick, smooth flooring. He is averse to indoor stairs but does okay with outside ones. He will walk out sideways and pedestrian bridges/tunnels but has a challenging time with those that have metal or slated materials. He will enjoy older kids but we have learned that babies, toddlers and young children make him nervous. He will likely be fine with other dogs. He has lived with another small breed dog when he was a pup. If other dogs, then it would need to be a personality that isn't jealous of other dogs needing attention too. He has never lived with cats and the only time that he encountered one, she swiped at his face and he withdrew and didn't come near her again so it is likely a cat would be okay. He is typically never left home alone for longer than 4-5 hours. One of us works from home so he doesn't have to wait long periods of time alone or waiting to go outside. He has always lived in a single-family home with access to a yard. I am not sure he would do well in an apartment without quick, easy access to outside green space. We love this furry guy so much but it is becoming obvious that he may live a healthier life in a different environment. For this reason, we are seeking a good fit to rehome Sherman. Medically, he has high needs but he is enormously affectionate and otherwise an easy dog. I am sure that you couldn't find a quirkier, sweeter dog. His favorite things include peanut butter, tennis balls and ear scratches. His singular talent is bellowing along with the harmonica of Bob Dylan.
