About SYRUP

Adoption Fee: $550
Chihuahua mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

SYRUP was saved from a high kill shelter in Texas where dogs have just 3 dogs to be saved. SYRUP is neutered, core vaccines, rabies, de-wormed, heartworm and tick disease tested negative and micro-chipped. He has an estimated date of birth of 17 October 2016 and at the time of rescue at the beginning of December 2018 weighed around 7.25 pounds. He is listed as a Chihuahua. We have no way of knowing the exact breed, it is up to individuals to decide what breed they think is most likely. Syrup is a typical small dog who thinks he is King Kong. He can be the sweetest thing in the world, but should a dog walk past him if he has a hoof or chew and he turns into the incredible Hulk lol. Whilst at the rescue he has never been aggressive, yes he will growl if a dog goes near him whilst he has a hoof or a chew, he will growl if a dog gets in his space, but that is typical behaviour for a lot of dogs. Syrup likes to be fussed over and if anyone comes to the rescue he is the first to go and greet them. He does 'mouth' which I think is due to the fact that he has most likely not been around humans much when he was younger, or was taught how to behave. He is very responsive and with consistent training he will learn, but this is something to be aware of and makes him not really suitable for children in case he mouths a little too hard and it is construed as a bite. Syrup is a small dog with an independent mind, he definitely needs someone that understands he must have training and he must learn and understand that humans are in charge. He is a very sweet boy full of love and affection and loves to play, but with a family that babies him and doesn't gain his respect could lead to behaviour problems. When Syrup first arrived at the rescue he lived in the trustee area with 15 other dogs that all shared food, water, play space, sleeping and toys and treats. He was fine, he held his own with the other dogs. Syrup was adopted at the beginning of 2019, however after a week his family contacted me saying he needed to come back. She said he was aggressive, protective of her and his treats and toys and would charge at her other dogs. She said when she tried to put him in a crate he would get aggressive and did bite her, although didn't break the skin. This sweet boy has obviously been through a lot and he needs a family that understands this and will be firm but compassionate with him. Since being back at the rescue he is living in the house with 15 other dogs and he has not been aggressive, I do not allow him to do what he wants and he is happy chilling out in front of the pellet stove. He does try and get up on my lap, but I tell him no and he will go back to the dog bed in front of the pellet stove. He has growled at me occasionally however I tell him no and he will go into the large crate next to the dog bed that I have for dogs to hang out in. I do not try and pick him up or do anything that might escalate the situation as that would be setting him up for failure. This has not been a regular thing at all, he knows i will not accept that behaviour and so does not carry on with it. He really just needs a patient, understanding family, that is firm with him so he understands his place. A family that will let him hang out on their lap, take him on adventures and let him learn to trust and develop his personality. He has been very friendly with everyone that has met him. All dogs (except dogs saved from China) are available for adoption for an adoption fee of $550. Canadian adopters need to know that customs charge 15% taxes when entering into Canada. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed.
