About Washburn

Adoption Fee: $65
Lab / Australian Cattle Dog
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

If anyone is looking for a loyal friend Washburn is one of the best trained dogs you'll find. He's mostly deaf, but knows commands by simple sign language that is easy to learn. He knows: sit, stay, lay down, drop, leave it, OK, back or out, shake, high 5, figure 8, play dead, turn around, and balances treats on his paws until allowed to eat the treats. Washburn is gentle walking and doesn't pull unless he has to potty. He's potty trained and hasn't had an accident in three years. Washburn LOVES tummy rubs, trips to the doggie park, going on walks, training time, fetch, swimming, runs, going camping, and just hanging out at home. Most the time he is chill and lays around the house while you are busy, preferring his kennel or a choice rug. As soon as you want to do something though, Washburn is active and ready to go! He doesn't touch anything in the house unless you let him know it's a toy. (Doesn't chew socks, shoes, carpet, dig holes or any of those bad behaviors even when you're not home.) He does occasionally bark at strangers from the backyard. Kids should be 10 or older and mature around dogs. Washburn is not aggressive with food and you can stick your hand in his bowl. He's protective and skittish with strangers in his home and does best going to his kennel or backyard when guests are over. If you're looking for a sweet guard dog who loves you and is loyal, Washburn is the best. If you're in the Lincoln area our trainer/ dog whisperer will continue to work with you without any further cost to you. Special Needs: Washburn was born mostly deaf. He can sometimes hear a loud sound, such as a door slamming. He does not seem to notice fireworks. He is very obedient to sign language commands and knows many, both basic and tricks. Videos of the signs for you to learn will be provided upon adoption. Description of Aggression: He can occasionally lunge with a loud bark while on a leash or if (mostly male) strangers come into his home. We have worked with a trainer on this and it is now a rare occurrence. However, we do suspect that the stress of rehoming may cause the behavior to increase for a short time while he adjusts, until he becomes used to his new surroundings. He has never bitten anyone.
