About Rhubarb

6 year old mini schnauzer-mix rescued from the Cleveland APL in August of this year and is a wonderful dog. She has some issues which were known at time of adoption, like anxiety in the car and pulling/distractions on leash, but working with a trainer has seen big improvements in her behavior in many areas. She has anxiety in the car and must be crated on car rides, but really enjoys them. Responds very well to commands Sit, Stay, Heel (when not distracted), Leave It, and 'Go to your place' (does very well in her crate and loves to sleep in her crate at night). She is 100% housebroken and has never had an accident in the home. She must be rehomed for one reason, she ha extreme paw sensitivity and becomes aggressive when her paws are handled. At adoption, the APL staff reported she 'freaked out' when they tried to trim the hair on her paws and took her seriously when she would growl. Recently the paw sensitivity seems to have gotten much worse-- she has bitten and broken the skin during grooming and while having her paws wiped off after a walk. She was examined by her veterinarian on 11/28 and it was determined her paw-related aggression is a behavioral issue, not a medical issue. She will require a home with an owner who can be a strong leader and commit to using a muzzle when her paws must be handled (grooming, etc). Because she is so cute and friendly, humans have not been understanding of her extreme behavior until they see it in action. Her paws can't be wiped off when wet, cannot be handled to put on clothing, and must be skipped when in the bath. She can be a wonderful dog for the right owner.
