About Ruby

Adoption Fee: $200
Rat Terrier
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Introducing Ruby! She is a very, very shy Rat Terrier who is somewhere between 2-4 years old and weighs 9 pounds. Ruby is super nervous and doesn't appear to have been used to interacting with people much before coming to us from a hoarding situation. It was several days before her foster mom was able to pet Ruby and, even now after a month, she still can't pick her up. Ruby spent her first two weeks hiding under the bed because she was so afraid to be in her new situation. Even though her foster mom can now approach her, she is still very nervous of loud noises and bright lights, even the TV sometimes, so she will need to be in a relatively quiet home if she is to settle. Ruby sleeps at night on the big bed with her foster mom and the other dogs in the home. She gets on fine with the them and the cats in the house. Compared to her first few weeks, she has made huge strides forward in her progress, but she will still need a lot of care and patience to help her come further out of her shell. She has been tested with kids and she doesn't like them at all! They are too loud and their movements too unpredictable around her, so no home with younger children. The foster has a 9 year old and that is still too young, so we're thinking teenagers at least. Ruby is housebroken except for the occasional accident in the middle of the night, always near the door, so she is aware she needs to go out. It's hard for her to meet new people as she will just hide away from them, whatever age they are. This will make it very difficult for her to be at any of the adoption events at PetSmart because she will be too afraid of all the noise and bustle. She will be much better in a meet and greet situation where she can relax, take her time and not feel threatened. We know that Ruby isn't going to fit in just any household. She will need a special person who can take the time to help her feel safe. The more time you can spend with her, the sooner she will settle in. You will need to work to gain her trust but we firmly believe there is a person for every dog. We have seen it happen time and time again and we know that Ruby's new owner is out there somewhere! Could it be you?
