About Cortland

Adoption Fee: $175
Rat Terrier
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Cortland's normal quiet dignity gets eclipsed by happy energy when you ask him if he wants to go for a W-A-L-K. He will run to where the leashes are hanging, prancing and wagging his enthusiasm. Once outside, he trots confidently by your side with a slack leash, eagerly sniffing the air and the bushes to find out what the neighborhood has been up to lately. Feel like breaking into a jog? He will keep right up with you, knowing that even at 10 years old he could run circles around you whenever he wants. Cortland wasn't always so happy, though. When he was at the shelter with its noisy chaos and loneliness, suffering from dental disease, skin infection, and a ruptured anal gland, life didn't seem so great, and he listlessly moped in despair. When a stranger drove him away, plopped him into a bathtub for some shelter-stench removal, then took him to the vet for shots and prodding, he was thinking things hadn't improved much. But within a couple of days in his new foster home, he realized that food, pats, attention, and free-ranging time in the sunshine were all plentiful, and life was good. So 17.5-lb. Cortland is seeking a permanent home with someone who likes to give and receive gentle affection. If you have no other dogs, that is just fine with him, because strange new dogs do take a while to get used to--and require some initial barking, growling, and grumbling. Even after any new dogs have proved themselves to be acceptable companions, he can still be a bit bossy with treats and he thinks he must get involved when another dog barks or yelps, so being your one and only loyal canine would be great. Cortland will show himself to be reliably house-trained, either with a dog door or a regular schedule, and if you forget, he will go to the door to remind you. Well, unless it is cold and raining, that is...then all bets are off. But if you have a leash and an umbrella to coax him out, he will usually do his business in record time. Cortland is a mature dog who watches you, listens to you, and wants to please you. What could be better?
