About Shania

Meet Shania, a 3-4 YO, 69 lbs, Female, German Shepherd. She is a gorgeous, sweet girl who came to PAWS after being a stray for quite a while. During this time, witnesses tell us she was chased, had things thrown at her, and had to live off the land in order to survive. She is shy because of this and trusts women more than men. Shania shakes (never growls) when a new man approaches her for the first time, which suggests to us she has had a bad experience(s) with a man in her previous life. However, once she knows a person, she is calm and comfortable with them, and wants to be with her person all the time. Shania walks nicely on a leash, doesn't pull, and knows how to sit on command. She's very smart and willing to learn new commands. Her energy level is normal for a German Shepherd; she can go hiking with you, then lay around relaxing with you. She isn't crate trained and doesn't like to be confined to one or a kennel. She is good with some dogs, but we don't know how she is with cats. Considering her life as a stray, we suggest her only companion(s) would be dogs. Shania has separation anxiety, but is improving and seems to cope better with a canine companion. She loves to be outside and is not a barker, which is surprising considering her breed. Shania would do best with an experienced dog owner who has experience with the German Shepherd breed. She needs a quiet environment where someone works from home or doesn't work, who has a fenced-in year, and somewhere safe to be put when her owners have to leave. She is currently on treatment for her heartworms, and will need to be on Advantage Multi-Flea and Heartworm preventive every month for the rest of her life.
