Update as of 4/26/19 I found out Gracie's background from a volunteer who took care of her and her siblings in the shelter in Loreto Mexico. It is very heartbreaking but here is what she wrote to me: From my brief experience in the month of July/August last year, the lack of mothering most likely has to do with their skiddishness. Their mother who was in a really skinny shape when brought in with 4 week old pups back in February I think, died while they were a little over 6 weeks old and the pups probably felt very vulnerable with just someone coming in to their caged area and feeding them puppy food. When I first met her, she was a teeny little thing that fit in my hand. She was dragging confidently too. When she came out of the mom's crate, she was always trying to hide behind the other crate and scoot around me to get into the shade. The reason I stopped going is because one day, I watched the mother kill one of the pups. It grossed me out so much I couldn't return. I really should have not stopped till July. I know she really had no muscle on her and probably her brain wasn't all fine either... I think Gracie has come a long way. She is very happy living here with 4 other dogs. She is very playful and active. But, she needs her 'forever home and her own person and/or doggy buddy'. Update as of 3/17/19 Gracie is still with us. Gracie is a very sweet dog but she is pretty shy to new people and new environments. She loves our dogs (we have 4 more) and enjoys walks. You can see in the attached video how she walks and gets around with the bad leg. I am not so worried about her leg, instead I think the biggest hurdle for her would be how patient the new owner can be because she is very sensitive. She is now potty trained. I take her out every 2-3 hours unless she is confined in the utility room while I am at work (up to 6hrs and she can hold when confined). She sleeps in her crate and can hold potty for 9 hrs. She loves my attention and she likes to put her head on my lap to be petted. Update as of 12/14/18 Gracie likes walks now!! I take her out on the bike path along with one of our dogs and she likes to sniff grasses and ground and tries to keep up with her buddie. She loves to play with squeaky toys and chews on bones. She runs around our backyard with our dogs and has been very happy!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Gracie was rescued in Loreto, Mexico and sent to me on Oct 21. She is approx. 7 mos old and weighs 18 lbs. She is shy at first with new people but warms up. She is currently living in harmony with 4 other dogs and 3 cats at her foster home. She is very healthy with good appetite but she has a deformed leg (left hind leg is stiff and doesn't bend). She is using the bad leg and she can run and go up/down slopes in our yard and a few steps without any problems. We haven't taken her out to walk since she is still very scared of outside of our home/yard. Maybe she will be just happy to be inside and in the yard for the rest of her life when she has friends and toys to play with. I am not taken her to dog park either because she will be vulnerable with rambunctious dogs.
