About Smudge

Maine Coon
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Name : Smudge Breed : Maine Coon Gender : Male Size : medium Smudge is a wonderful, very friendly and sweet, highly social, 2 1/2 year old male Maine Coon rescue and he needs a forever home. He is a dark tabby, with the ideal breed fur type: fuzzy underfur, soft regular coat, and longer shag. His longer guard hairs are light, giving him an unusual and gorgeous color of black tabby with tan tips. He is nearly black along his back. There is a smudge under his chin which earned him his name. Smudge was abandoned by a neighbor who bred MCs, who had a foreclosure in July 2016 and abandoned her house and at least two cats that I know of. After she left, I saw glimpses of Smudge outside for the next few weeks but he would run away. Then one day I was outside and he came up to me crying and skinny, his long fluffy tail covered in burrs. He was pathetic, dehydrated and starving. This is NOT an outdoor cat and he wouldn't have survived. He was about 5 months old, so would have been born around March 2016. I got him neutered, shots, chipped, wormed, ear mite treatment; the works! and he has been indoors solid for 2 years. No diseases or health issues. Flea and tick free. I also have a ginger tabby Maine Coon from the same woman who abandoned Smudge. Smudge has turned into a very beautiful cat, with an impressive and lovely ruff and long tail which is his glory, and beautiful dark mottled coloring with tan feathering. He is still smallish for an MC, 13 pounds currently, but he's only 2.5 yrs old and they often don't reach full size till 5 years. He has plenty of the Maine Coon personality and traits. He is such a sweet cat; very friendly and loving. He loves to be held and petted, and will lay beside you or on your lap, purring for hours. He is playful, and has some toys he prefers. He especially likes one of those boxes with the holes that you put the toys in; he will spend a while getting them out of the box with his big fluffy paws. He often acts silly or quite goofy. He likes to sit on a cat tree and watch out the window, and will need a cat tree or something very stable to scratch on. Smudge is pretty smart; he knows his name as Smudgie and will come when called. If you yell 'No' at him, he will stop what he's doing. Highly social, he will try to anticipate what you want so he's easy to train. He wants to follow you around and be involved in what you are doing. He will fuss for food and water if he gets low, but he thinks adding his toys into the bowls makes more. He likes a certain brand of treats, and he likes catnip. He also likes routine and plenty of attention. He gets anxiety if he has to be away from you for too long, but he's fine during the day as long as you give him plenty of attention and he can be near you when you're home. Lovers of Maine Coons always talk about this dog-like quality of the breed, and he's got it. I think it helps to have the tv on while you're gone. He is good at the vets and with nail clipping, and has never bitten or scratched. He is very docile and sweet, and likes his belly rubbed too. Sometimes he loves being brushed, and he'll tolerate it even if he doesn't want you to do it right now. He goes limp when you pick him up. He prefers a very clean litter box but if you scoop religiously (preferably twice a day) you will have no accidents. He wont use a litter box if another cat has used it and that's why he needs a home of his own without the stress of other cats around. Smudge will spray if there are tensions with another cat, (or dogs) so he needs to go to a 1 cat home. MCs are territorial like that. Don't take the chance with other cats unless you are a committed cat-whisperer. Because he has territory issues with two of my other cats, and wont use a litter box if those two have used it, so I have him confined to two rooms and that is just not fair. So he needs a home of his own. I'll keep him if no one wants this beautiful and very loving cat, but confining him away from a human most of the time is hard on him. This is a cat who will adore you, and sit on your lap and purr, happy to be near you. He is afraid of thunderstorms and vacuum cleaners. He flips his tail up in a funny way all his own when he's focused. He sheds a bit, especially as the weather changes. Don't have leather furniture- he'll use a cat tree or scratching post but a leather chair is too much temptation to ask of a cat, especially a Maine Coon who will SHRED it. If you love Maine Coons but can't afford one, look for a rescue. I'll make sure he takes along his favorite toys and his blanket. I have more pictures at https://ibb.co/album/ed1K6F since just one can't show all the sides of his personality. And he has LOTS of personality. Email for info!
