About Maple

Adoption Fee: $175
Rat Terrier
Age: Adult
Sex: Female

The eyes of a dog can speak volumes, can't they? At least, that's true of pretty Maple's eyes. They're soft and gentle with a touch of sadness and a ton of hope. There are two things that will make her eyes light up. One is food, of course, because what good little Rattie mix doesn't love to eat? The other is the opportunity to go out in a fenced yard to explore. She relishes sniffing around, barking at the mail carrier, chasing squirrels, and being part of the pack with the other dogs in her foster home. Maple is very comfortable around other animals, but people are another story. We don't know much about Maple's background, but she is very frightened of certain actions and situations. She's only 3 or 4 years old and a great size at 15 lbs., but please don't be too quick to pick her up because she might scream! In fact, sometimes she may cry out if you just walk too close to her. However, she is not at all agressive. She will roll on her back or crouch down and wiggle around to avoid you picking her up. Was she kicked or dropped sometime in her past? Her eyes say that something happened and because of this, her new home shouldn't have young children, who would find it hard not to hug her or pick her up. In spite of what may have happened to her, Maple is making impressive progress every day in her foster home. She's learning to ask for attention and now sits on the couch with her foster family at night. She has recently started jumping on the bed in the morning and asking for rubs. And while she's still quite shy, she will sit in your lap and sit quietly for visitors and allow them to pet her. Maple is house-trained and crate trained. She does not walk on a leash very well, so she will need a fenced yard. Maple's eyes tell us that she wants to love and be loved, but she is going to need a patient person to help her come out of her shell. What a heartwarming feeling you'll have helping her learn to trust again. You'll know you've made her happy. You'll see it in her eyes.
