About Altair

Adoption Fee: $75
Lab mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Stunning Altair is a 5-(or 4 or 6)-year-old distinguished black lab mix who was at Pima Animal Care Center for far too long after being picked up as a stray. Not much is known of his previous life and he spent almost 5 months in the shelter before he busted out into a foster home. Now he is learning what it is like to be part of a family with the support of RAD Rescue, and he is looking for a home all his own. He has eyes the color of pumpkin spice which will look up adoringly at those he trusts. He can be a bit fearful of some males and will take longer to feel comfortable around them. But once he does, get ready for that mesmerizing look! It doesn't take much to make Altair happy: tennis balls and a wading pool. Add a stuffie he can carry around in his mouth and he's content! He is very housebroken, listens quite well, and knows sit and 'give' (will drop his tennis ball before you throw another one). He's learning not to jump up on people (not very quickly though because foster mom isn't strict about that rule). Altair needs a family who will be patient and give him the space he needs until he fully trusts. And he may never be the dog that gets to go to crowded events with tight spaces or large family reunions. But he loves to go on hikes and will play catch all day long. Due to an unknown history with kids and his continually-developing confidence, very young children would not be compatible but older, dog-savvy teens could be considered. He currently lives with 7 other dogs and seems to be a bit male dog selective (hmmm, notice a pattern?). He gets along with all the like-size female dogs and the 24-pound male Frenchie but does not care for the 2 like-size males, so they are kept separate. A dog intro will be required and slow introductions are always highly encouraged. Altair is currently competing with so many other dogs for love and attention, he would love a family of his own. But he was at risk for being killed in the shelter because of his deteriorating behavior so we're definitely happy he has this second chance! He will need patience and understanding. He is a gorgeous dog who is working on building his inner confidence and trust of the big world around him. Do you know anyone who would be a good fit and give Altair the life he deserves?
