About Rocco

Adoption Fee: $350.00
Boston Terrier
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Our genial little Rocco was surrendered by his beleaguered owner, who had been thrown one of life's curveballs and was no longer able to care him. Rocco entered NYCACC at the age of nine, and seemed wholehartedly depressed, when we saw him hunkered down into the far recesses of his kennel. Rocco didn't adjust to shelter life very well, and was quickly put on the euthanasia list. We were thrilled to offer him a better option. Rocco has really come out of his shell nicely, and has become a lovely dog. He is somewhat shy with strangers at first, but he warms quickly, and after a few minutes becomes quite peppy and fun-loving. He appears to be a Boston Terrier, with breed standard black and white coloring, and he has that stocky, muscular Terrier build. His short coat is smooth to touch, and he is a breeze to groom. He has a moderate energy level, and would be satisfied with one to two leisurely leash walks each day, along with frequent potty trips. Rocco has shown remarkable resilience and good nature as he has adjusted to foster care. He loves everyone, and seems patient and tolerant of routine handling by care givers and vet staff. We think that Rocco would thrive in a calm adult home, where he could relax and enjoy his people. Rocco is the ultimate companion dog, after he has a little bit of time to warm up. He is sweet and affectionate and craves human touch from folks who can respect his space. He would be a great addition to a multi-dog home and would likely be fine with cats. Rocco is missing one ear. As his backstory has been pieced together, we've learned that he had an ear ablation surgery: the entire ear canal was moved as a result of a bad ear infection. The poor guy suffered for years, misdiagnosed, when he actually had simple food and environmental allergies. We have identified a specific list of foods that Rocco should avoid, as well as some environmental allergens that can be addressed with a daily pill. We have been successful in resolving all of his allergy symptoms. Rocco is on a limited ingredient dog food that is easily ordered from Chewy.com. The maintenance routine to manage Rocco's allergies is extremely simple. Rocco is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during his transition to a new home. He is in optimal health, although, adopters must commit to a healthy allergen-free diet, rich in quality protein and Omega fats, as well as a light exercise regimen, to maintain his weight between 20 to 25 pounds. Rocco has been neutered, and vaccinated for Rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus). He has been boostered as needed. He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis, and he has been dewormed.
