About Carter

Adoption Fee: $35.00
American Staffordshire Terrier / Mastiff
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

Please read carefully the following from a professional trainer working with Carter: Here is some iniformation about Carters background. Carter IS an actual abuse case. And a very young (0 to 6 months) actual abuse case. he was surrendered to us, along with 3 litter mates, from his owner. This owner surrendered these pups by throwing them over a gate to us and he was not willing to fill out any information/forms that we requested. The litter mates were adopted quickly as they were very submissive. Carter was not. It became apparent very quickly that Carter had declared himself the guardian of his litter mates. Because he had done this, the owner had abused him much more frequently because he showed 'aggression'. Long story short: Carter is extremely distrusting of humans. Once you are able to gain his trust he is very loyal but even though he becomes loyal on 'Tuesday', when he sees you on 'Wednesday' morning he may become afraid or over excited again. He doesn't know the difference between 'mouthing' or 'excitement' yet. He can bite from excitement and/or surprise. Carter cannot be in a home with any children, whether they are part of the household or visiting. Sudden movements may alert him. More importantly, Carter needs owners that are very versed in dog training, dog behavior, and advanced experience in reading dog nuances and behaviors. Unfortunately Carter is not a dog that can be conditioned to a regular household without constant training and a knowledge trainer. With the right training and a LOT of patience he will make a great family dog someday. Having said that, whoever takes Carter as a pet now has a long and arduous road to follow. It will be quite a commitment but most likely worth it in the end. Carter is being crate trained (and doing well) so that when guests are at your home there are no worries.
