About Dexter

Wonderfully sociable, gentle giant of a dog! Plays fetch and does simple tricks on command (sit, stay, handshake, lie down). He loves cuddles and licks, has no sense of personal space, adores car rides and walks, and in the summer enjoys wading in a shallow kiddie pool (he's never tried swimming). He is the perfect companion for movie watching and keeps the monsters away as a loyal bedside guard. Dexter's curly tail is always wagging, and his face is always smiling. Currently, Dexter lives in a home with a large (1/4 acre) yard and has unlimited in/out access, but he would do fine in less space as long as he gets good exercise. He doesn't bark much, only whines from loneliness when he is left alone/locked out away from his people for extended periods. He is friendly with all guests and family, and loves making new friends on when he's out and about. We have dog DNA test results for Dexter that shows he is 50% pure Akita mixed with 25% American Staffordshire Terrier and 25% Sharpei. Weird mix, but it works. He is just under 120lbs and has short fur that sheds seasonally, and very little undercoat. He has had an allergic reaction to a flea bite once before which we have since then prevented with monthly Advantage flea repellent. He is a bit of a picky eater and hates vegetables, but at least he's polite about it. Dexter will gingerly take the treat you give him and walk away to privately spit it out if he hates it. Dexter does not get along with our other large male dog, but otherwise he is an absolutely perfect family dog.
