About Clifton

Adoption Fee: $200
Pomeranian
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Clifton is an 8 year old Pomeranian in search of a dog-saavy family. Clifton was surrendered to a shelter due to his owners getting divorced. A rescue pulled him from the shelter and proceeded to adopt out Clifton the very next day. An experienced, ethical animal rescue would give Clifton at least several weeks in foster care before placing him in a 'forever' home. This gives the animal much-needed time to decompress and also gives his rescuers a chance to get to know his personality, work on training, and address his medical needs. Needless to say, the adoptive home did not work out. Clifton bit the adopter when he was guarding a couch. He exhibits what is known as 'resource guarding', a common and treatable behavior, curbed by consistent training. Dogs tend to guard their favorite people, sleeping spot, toys, and food. After the incident, the rescue decided he should be euthanized, as they did not want to put effort into training the dog and finding a proper home. Thankfully, they instead opted to return him to the shelter. This is where Saver of Souls stepped in. We felt that the other rescue set Clifton up for failure and he deserved a second chance. Clifton is thriving in his foster home, where he has yet to exhibit any signs of aggression. His foster employs a steady routine, which helps dogs adjust to new people and surroundings. Clifton is playing well with the other animals in the home and is a happy, affectionate pet. Due to a very strong personality and a bite history, Clifton will only be available for adoption to someone who is an experienced dog owner that has dealt with dogs with a dominant nature. He will NOT be allowed into a home with children, grandchildren, or one that babysits children or has children frequently visit. The adopter must have a crate, Martingale collar and 6 foot leash. The adopter will be required to enroll in a 6 week obedience course at Canine Training Unlimited (included in the adoption fee). This training facility is located in Chesapeake, VA. The adopter must also be willing to do continued training beyond the 6 weeks if necessary. This is a good dog but thinks he%A0should be allowed to be the boss and needs to have rules and boundaries set and enforced. He needs to learn that bad behavior and 'temper tantrums' need to stop. If you are not willing to do everything it takes to work with this dog and help it become a loving family member then this isn't the dog for you. He is doing well with the current foster but acts up when put into another home. He needs to be given time to decompress and get to know a new owner. If you are seriously interested in adoption and are willing to work for a lasting and rewarding friendship please contact us. If you don't have the time or dedication for this particular dog we do have plenty of others that are available for adoption. An application, vet reference, and a home visit are all required to adopt a pet from our rescue. All current pets must be spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccines, and kept on heartworm prevention. Please send us a message if you are interested in adopting Clifton.
