About Rico

This handsome boy is Rico. He is a 10 year old Schnauzer mix who weighs 18 pounds. He came to us from a neighboring shelter where he had been picked up as a stray and was never claimed. Rico was a bit reserved at first but he was soon playing with the other dogs and toys and has been bouncing around with them like a puppy. He has cataracts and his vision is a little impaired but he can still see close up, just not too far away. Rico was recently adopted but the family decided they would prefer a younger dog to grow up with their son, so he was returned. Rico is a very loving boy. He likes to lay in your lap or be cuddled up next to his foster mom on the couch. He is working on housebreaking and has been using the dog door to go outside independently. Rico prefers to sleep on the bed next to his person but, if other dogs in the house make a fuss, he will just sleep on the dog bed at the side of the bed. His foster mom thinks he would be ok with older kids but not small kids. Sometimes when she picks him up he does this grumpy old man growl that's more like a ' hey I was pretty comfortable where I was ya know!' He loves to be outside in the sun and will sit out as long as he can, just sunbathing or rolling in the grass. Rico is heartworm positive and is currently undergoing the slow kill treatment. This approach is very simple and effective. All he requires for this is a monthly Advantage Multi topical treatment that will gradually eliminate the heartworms in his body over a period of time. The adopter must agree to continue with this treatment. The rescue will pay for the retest after 6 months or until he tests negative.
