About Dobby

Dobby is looking someone willing to foster to adopt untill his heartworms are gone! He is a 55lb Golden Retrieve mix, guessed to be about 9 years old. Dobby has had it rough. He ended up at the shelter after being attacked by 2 strays, then sat there until he was given a deadline to find a home. His current foster says this about Dobby; Dobby wants lots of love and especially likes belly rubs once he gets to know you. He will stick to you like glue until you love on him. He can be somewhat mischievous when wanting attention, such as pulling on a pants leg or picking up a house slipper; then he looks up as if to say, 'hey, how about some love here?' He has learned 'sit' and 'go lay down.' He loves to go for a walk, although he is still learning how to walk on a leash without pulling. Due to his age and hip problems, he tires fairly quickly, but is always willing to go a little further. It's important to know that Dobby is partially blind. He startles easily if he doesn't see you coming. He particularly has challenges at dusk and at night; he has run into walls, posts, etc, and has slipped off curbs or stumbled over them. We have worked on the command 'easy' as a way to prepare him for stairs, a curb, or a post. He likes to be off-leash, and would probably be happiest in a home with a (fenced-in) yard. Off-leash (in a small dog park), he is hesitant but friendly to other dogs, male or female. However, on-leash, he is fearful of other dogs, especially males, and will growl and bark. He has learned to tolerate his smaller female housemate, but he likes to be 'top dog' and would probably do best as an only dog. He is food aggressive with his housemate, but he doesn't mind if his human interrupts his dinner, moves his bowl, etc. He has only seen two cats since he's been here, and he tried to chase them down, so he probably would not get along with cats in the home. Dobby has some fairly strong herding instincts, which really kick in when someone runs by him. He has also demonstrated some fear towards smaller, noisy children. He is definitely afraid of skateboards and large, loud trucks. Overall, Dobby is a sweet, loving older dog that needs and wants a loving leader, and a place to romp around and call his own.
