About Sam

Adoption Fee: $50.00
Brittany
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Our family met and rescued Sam from our local shelter in late May of this year. They had no information on him, except that he was a Brittany. We have had Brittanys for well over 40 years. We lost our last girl in 2017 at the age of 14. We were thrilled to adopt this boy! They estimate his age at around 3, and before the adoption, he had to be neutered. We have spent the last 5 months getting to know him better, and becoming family. Almost immediately we learned that he must have been left alone alot, or abandoned, as he has separation anxiety, and is very fearful of both wire and plastic crates - he will escape from them. He is house trained and behaves very well in the home, no chewing, no toileting accidents ect. He prefers human furniture to his pet bed. He shows promise in his natural ability for hunting, although my husband has not had occasion to hunt with him yet. He does love to be outside, we have put him in our outdoor kennel(with access to inside garage kennel) while we are at work, but it had to be reinforced as he was able to dig out of it and escape. He truly is a delightful dog with good manners. However, we have our daughter and granddaughter living with us, and other grandchildren that visit often. He does not do well with children, and is very possessive of myself and daughter, to a point of growling at any of the grandkids who come close to us. We at first dismissed it as it being new, but he has now also tried to nip at my teenage granddaughter if she is sitting near me. I feel he would do well in a home with only one or two adults, no children. He gets along well with our outdoor cats, and does well with smaller dogs, and female dogs, he is aggressive to large dogs and to other male dogs. It breaks my heart to try and find a new home for him, but i cannot trust him with the grandkids. I cannot send him back to the local shelter, he is too tenderhearted to be left there, even though it is a very nice shelter. Also, he has been microchipped.
