About Buddy

Adoption Fee: $300.00
Great Dane / Lab
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Buddy: a companion, a partner . . . a close friend. Allow me to introduce you to, Buddy. Buddy needs a friend. Buddy is looking for a human that is patient, trustworthy, loyal and kind. Buddy is a 70lb 1.5-2 year-old male Lab/Great Dane mix. He is neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped. Buddy is house trained. He knows Sit, is working on, Stay and is learning, Place and Come . . . when Buddy is called, he will come to his female person with his tail wagging. But, if she walks toward him, he will run away. If she turns and walks away and calls him again, he will usually follow along side. But, if his male person calls him, he runs the other way with his tail tucked between his legs. Buddy likely suffered a past of abuse perpetrated primarily by men. When he sees a man he sees a potential threat and he is fearful. He is also fearful of people wearing big hats and carrying things that could be used to hit him. Buddy also experiences anxiety. Fear and anxiety are frequently associated with one another. Buddy's anxiety is managed with the use of the crate when his people are out, as well as special calming treats. It will take a patient person who is willing to work with Buddy to regain his trust and rebuild his confidence. But, the rewards that they will receive will be immeasurable. Buddy loves to have his back, near the base of his tail, rubbed most-and it seems to help him relax. Buddy is a sweet boy who loves to be with his person and with the companionship of other dogs. Buddy loves Sojos turkey treats. His person uses them to reward the behaviors she wants to see more of. Buddy also loves blackberries, so much so, that he discovered he can pick them off the bush himself. Buddy is a good sleeper. He feels most comfortable sleeping in a crate within his person's bedroom. Buddy is being fostered in a home with other dogs, cats and livestock poultry. He was introduced slowly, one at time to the other house pets. At first he didn't show much interest in the other dogs, but after three weeks, he now enjoys galloping around the 4 acre fenced yard with them. When Buddy first met the cats, he sniffed them and was interested in playing with one of them, whose interest was sadly not returned. So, he was told 'Leave It,' and he complied. His foster family also keeps ducks and chickens in a fenced area. When he first arrived he followed his foster mom right into the coop with her, and acted like it was no big deal! So perhaps he would be fine with free-ranging flocks, but we can't say for certain. We can say that he has no issue seeing them from the other side of the fence. Buddy has mostly positive interactions with the other pets in the home. But, he shows possessiveness with food dishes. Therefore, he is crated while his and the other dog's meals are prepared and eaten. He gives a warning growl to pets that walk past him, when he is crated . . . outside the crate and with the absence of food, his interactions are positive and peaceful. It can't be sugar-coated; Buddy had the misfortune of living with humans who were cruel and untrustworthy. And it will take time to undo the damage. It will take time to build trust. It will take time to grow love. It will take time to build friendship. Ralph Waldo Emerson is credited with writing, 'The only way to have a friend is to be one.' We could not agree more. And we cannot wait to meet the special person who wants Buddy to be her BFF.
