About Kota

Adoption Fee: $100
Alaskan Malamute / Siberian Husky
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

We have a beautiful 2.5 year old Malamute/Husky that we are looking to re-home. He was in a shelter for over a year before he came to Colorado and before that we believe he was on his own living on a farm, possibly with some training. Colorado rescue brought hundreds of dogs from Kansas that were in these overpopulated shelters. Kota was literally never viewed for adoption for a year due to that cluttered environment. We adopted him on March 1st, 2018. What we've learned is that he is so loving, sweet and cuddly, AMAZING with young children and all humans who know how to handle a dog. Kota is protective and gentle with with our 3 year old daughter. It's amazing to watch their bond. He's so fun and has a good amount of energy but sleeps a lot. We're surprised that he doesn't have nearly as much energy as we had expected for his breed. We can run him for 20 minutes once or twice a day in our backyard and that's almost too much for him. Important to note that we was very underweight when we adopted him, but he's gained about 25lbs since. That could have something to do with his stamina. He is house broken and knows basic commands, but the alpha male in him brings out his stubbornness when we give most commands. That's our fault - he needs much more training than we've given him, we've realized. But due to his past, he has extreme separation anxiety from My husband and from our family in general. We recently had a professional come to our home who gave us some training and we now can tell that he lives pretty much in constant fear/anxiety of protecting us and the house, and fear of separating from us. I'm sure there's a lot more to it that unfortunately we do not have the tools or time to give him the help he deserves. We both work full time and having a demanding 3 year old, it's impossible to give him what he needs. Sending him to a 4-6 week training camp is useless, as his issues are fear based and associated with his environment (separation from his pack, heavy weight of protecting his pack). We will not put him back in a shelter - that would be the worst for him. We will keep him until we can find the right home/group. We're looking to see if anyone knows of a nonprofit group or family who specializes in these types of breeds and dogs who live in fear and anxiety due to their bad past, and help to re-home these dogs taking care of where to place them as he has specific needs, and really needs a good few months of solid time and training to help him relieve himself of the fear he carries. He truly has become a member of our family and because we love him so much, we recognize that we can't give him what we needs and he deserves better. Thanks for any help/ideas you can send our way
