About Abby

American Shorthair / Domestic Cat
Age: Adult
Sex: Female

Hello there! My name is Abby, and I am a brand new resident at the Safe Place for Pets Welcome Center. To give you my statistics, I am a 7-year old brown and black domestic short hair spayed female. I'm pleasantly plump (no matter what that silly vet has to say!) at 10.9 lb. As you can see from my pictures, I am no ordinary, boring tabby, but a beautiful lady with strikingly contrasting black and golden-brown stripes and gorgeous green eyes and soft fur. One unusual thing about me is that I am a polydactyl. I have five toes on my front paws instead of four! It gave one of our volunteers a start when she first me because she was afraid that I was deformed. As if! It was rather amusing though. You may be interested to know that the author Ernest Hemingway was very fond of polydactyl cats, and as many as 40 of us roam the museum created on his home and gardens. Some people call us 'mitten cats,' and we were popular with sailors because our paws gave us a better grip on the ships' decks. I may seem a bit shy when you first meet me, but that doesn't last long. You'll find that very after I meet you - if not immediately - I will come up and ask you for some loving: petting, scratching, just about anything! I would love to lie in your lap and be petted and brushed. When I've had enough I'll turn around and pat your arm - no claws of course - to let you know that I'm done. I love to play and have many toys: mice, feathers on a pole, most anything! After all, I'm in the prime of my life! One thing that I ought to mention is that loud noises scare me. When I was a kitten, I was trapped by my leg in a field next to a construction site, and the noise from all those scary machines traumatized me so much that I've never forgotten it. Thank heavens that someone found me so that Mom could adopt me! Mom was wonderful, and I loved her dearly, but she passed away last February, so I have been living with her daughter and her husband. They are wonderful people and would have liked to keep me, but their two cats didn't want me there and my 'aunt' finally decided that it wasn't fair to keep me there where I had to stay in her bedroom all the time. It was a hard decision, but isn't it wonderful that she loves me enough to want the best for me? We all hope that I can find a new forever home and another person or family to love. Since I was an only pet, I'm not sure how I'd do around children or dogs. I'm pretty mellow though, so it might be fine as long as they aren't mean to me! I'd love for you to come to the Safe Place Welcome Center at 1520 North Hancock Ave. We are right next to the Senior Center near Patty Jewett Golf Course. You can call and schedule an appointment at 359-0201 or go to the Safe Place for Pets Website and fill out the online form saying that you want to meet me. Personally, I can't wait!
