Boogie M/N, 6 yr, tan/white terrier mix History - Boogie was the beloved companion of a well-known, local man, who lived his latter years partly on the street and partly in various trailers and rooms around town. The man had bad knees and often got about on a bicyle. Booger, as he called him, followed behind, pausing only for a quick pee or poo on the go. For a time, the man felt badly about his name and tried to change it to Bob Barker, but Booger stuck. Booger was rarely more thana few feet from his companion's side. Booger disappeared a few times, likely taken by the man's friends when he was passed out drunk. The man always got himself to Animal Control (not an easy eat when his bicycle was broken or missing) to make a lost report, distressed about his missing friend. The Animal Control Officers ensured Booger had flea medication, vaccines, and a current license, paying for them personally. Earlier this year, the man was hospitalized for failing health. He turned Booger over to us, and we adopted him to a local woman who took good care of him. When the man entered hospice, the adopter brought Boogie back for a final goodbye. After several months, the adopter's mental health was not well, and her caseworker insisted she surrender Boogie. He was adopted out again. This woman, though she also took good care of him, also ended up in the hospital for mental health issues. In between his homes, Boogie has lived with me. Although Boogie loved and was loyal to each of his human companions, his separations from them were traumatic, and he deserves a permanent home. Character - Boogie is a really wonderful dog. He is affectionate, likes all people, and bonds fairly quickly. He tolerates other dogs well, and has lived with a few different Pit Bull types in my home. He seems to be ok with cats. He is happy and playful (tug his toy!). He loves to be petted and snuggle under covers. Toys - He loves stuffed toys (we call them 'babies' at my house) and his current clear favorite is the green platypus, which seems to provide him comfort and security. He also enjoys carrying and chasing tennis balls (not so much retrieving them). When Boogie seems stressed, I tell him 'Find your baby,' and once he has located his stuffed toy, he seems to settle. Food - He has been eating %BD cup of Diamond Naturals dry food twice a day (6am, 5pm). Despite his history, he does not beg for human food. He sometimes gets milkbone treats, which he will often save for later (if the Pit doesn't get them first). Walks - Boogie pulls a little on a harness and leash, so please do not walk him on a collar. He was not leashed for nearly all of his life, so he is still learning. On walks, he will bark at passing dogs and pickup trucks (which in our town often have barking dogs in the bed). If told 'quiet' before the dog or truck approaches, he will increasing not bark or bark just once or twice. Always bring poop bags - he always poops on walks! Elimination - Boogie is housetrained. He poops small amounts multiple times a day. When he first came to my house, he pooped as he walked (consider his constant running behind a bicyle), sometimes in the house. He now poops entirely outside and takes time to stop. Crating - Boogie sleeps in a small crate next to my bed. He loves a fluffy pillow and I always make sure his favorite toy is with him. He does well through the night unless the other dog gets up and walks around, in which case he wants out. If I must leave him during the day (up to 6 hours when I teach), I put him in a 4 x 4 kennel with bed, pee pad (he's never used it), water, and toys. He doesn't enjoy it, but he will now stay without barking. When he first arrived at my home, he had minor separation anxiety (whining, barking, no destruction), but this has declined as he has adjusted to a daily routine. He still exhibits some separation anxiety if I leave him at the Shelter Office, but that place is associated with his trauma, so it is understandable. Enjoy him, he is a sweet dog!
