Maggie is the sweetest girl ever! I rescued her 8 mo ago from a shelter in which she was very afraid and shy. She is so fast and smart, I had big plans for her and I! I have easily trained her to sit, stay and she is quite fast, I wanted to make her my running partner. But upon getting Maggie, she was neglected by previous owners and was heartworm positive. After 5 long months of very invasive and painful treatment, we have tested negative and are back in action! I run with her and let her out to play, but she has not learned to play fetch or chase balls as her history is a mystery to me. She tends to cling to me when she feels scared and at times cowers from balls. She has bouts of playfulness, but on her terms. She is extremely gentle with kids, of all ages. My toddler will hug her and grab her and even annoyingly poke her, yet Maggie just submits completely. She is quite great with my children (ages 7 and 2). However, it has been a struggle to socialize her with others outside our family. She gets over protective and barks and used to lunge (we have stopped that, but occasionally she will regress as we have not kept up positive reinforcement). Please know, she has ZERO bite history though. She just wants to protect as we have not undone what she has endured. She actually doesn't have many bad habits besides her nervous fear of thunder storms, barking at people (which makes her a great security dog) and the lunging. This leads me to say, unfortunately I cannot keep her. She needs more time and attention spent on training. I have 2 kids that need me more and I feel Maggie deserves more attention, more training and outdoor fun. She is probably best in a one dog home, but then again, she has taken to other dogs that are well behaved. She is usually SUPER excited to meet other dogs, and I believe other dogs misread her excitement and it can esculate if you are not there to step in and calm the dogs or simply have the know how on proper dog introducement. Maggie is probably a mix of a Nova Scotia Duck Toller, Aussie Shepard, and my guess is Greyhound. Her body is very lean. She is quick and agile. She has a natural prey drive if you hunt and teach her, I believe she will out run and catch anything. Note, I do have a cat and she does not want to eat my cat! Nor does she chase him- actually she respects his boundaries but does like to greet him. It's actually very impressive how my cat trained Maggie up better than I feel I have (Lol!). Now, I have seen her chase after a rabbit when I used to walk her in the trails, but I stopped her, so I do not know what the outcome would have been. Since then, we have fenced in our yard, so no more rabbits, or deer. I believe she would love to go duck tolling or deer tracking, as I can tell she is quite bored with life since I have blocked off my yard from a wildlife refuge. She is smart and quick at learning. I will say she is slightly stubborn if she is scared, but that my friend, is a toller for you. She is still very young (2.5 years old) and has low confidence due to her mysterious previous life, so I suspect she will continue to improve with the right owner. Her bi eyes and bobbed tail are aussie shep traits, although that is only my guess. Her ginger coat color and white markings resemble a toller and her liver colored nose and lips. Her lean body and shape, plus her explosive speed have me convinced she has Greyhound in her. I want to find a better situation for Maggie. Someone who is patient and kind. If you can afford pro dog training, or know how to properly train a sweet dog like Maggie, Id love to setup a meeting or simply correspond if you are interested.
